Should I get a 90-day visa or a 60-day visa with an extension for my trip to Thailand?

My wife and I are planning a three month trip to Thailand, then onto Malaysia by train.

Would it be better to get a 90 day visa or 60 day then extend it?

We are hoping not to have to leave the country before we go to Malaysia.

Also would both options require proof of onward travel, in the form of a flight ticket?

Thanks in anticipation.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is inquiring whether to obtain a 90-day visa or a 60-day visa with the option to extend for their upcoming three-month trip to Thailand, as they do not want to exit the country before traveling to Malaysia. The question also touches on the need for proof of onward travel, such as a flight ticket.

You can get a 45 day on arrival at the airport and you can go to your nearest immigration office and get a 30 day

Thanks for all of replies, very helpful. We have traveled to Thailand many times but have not been in a position to plan such a long trip before.

What would be the reason for them to issue you a non O visa? Over 50? Married to a Thai?

The conditions for obtaining one are quite onerous compared to a simple tourist visa.

You do not need an onward flight for a non O, but you may well need one on a tourist visa. Immigration won’t ask you but your airline may not let you board if you don’t have one. Some airlines insist. So don’t. So it’s a coin toss as to whether you’ll need one. You can try and call your airline to ask their policy.

. Thanks but I’m still a little confused. Mu wife and I are both over 50. What would be our best option?

Would the other option be just a case of extending a 60 day tourist visa to 90 in Thailand or would we need to leave the country. Sorry for all the questions but I’m just trying to get some clarity.

you can extend the 60 day tourist visa for an extra 30 day yes. Just go to the immigration office which serves the area you're staying in at the time, cough up 1,900 baht each and they'll give you the extension.

Then there is nothing to stop you applying for the non O. You’ll have to check the requirements and costs and weigh up whether that’s worth the effort. I can’t say which one is better. Both options appear to suit your purposes.
