My onward ticket has always 5 months from my arrival. I was told by a Thai Consulate they don't care what your outbound ticket is because anyone can change this at anytime....

you don't actually have to leave. You just need to show that you have a ticket out of Thailand. But you can still apply for the 30 day extension.
