Can I enter Thailand on a visa-free stamp and extend my stay while applying for an ED visa?

Hi,

I am a bit confused because of the visa requirements and possible overlaps.

Briefly to the info, I am 36 years old and from Germany.

The situation is that I have planned on the last trip to stay longer term in Thailand with the ED visa. Unfortunately there was a death in the family and big family problems, so I had to go back unexpectedly. I had applied for an ED visa through a language school, but did not come to pick it up because I had to leave quickly.

The last 3 Thailand trips were from

15 October 2022 - 30 October 2022 = 16 days (stamp on entry)

8 January 2023 - 29 January 2023 = 22 days (stamp on entry)

2 March 2023 - 13 May 2023 (45 days + extension) = 73 days (stamp on entry)

I want to go back to Thailand as soon as possible and apply for ED visa again to stay there long term and to learn the language. I am guaranteed to be able to fly from 8/27/2023, possibly even earlier.

Could I now enter again without a visa, i.e. only with the stamp at the airport, or from when and then extend this again by 30 days? If this is not possible, could I apply for a 60 day visa, or does the 180 day regulation also apply here?

The application for the ED visa is relatively lengthy on site.

I would be very grateful for help.

TLDR : Answer Summary
A German expat is seeking advice on visa options for returning to Thailand after dealing with family issues. They previously planned to apply for an ED visa through a language school but had to leave unexpectedly. They are unsure if they can enter Thailand again without a visa (using a stamp) or if they need to apply for a tourist visa with an extension. Community members suggest various options, including applying for a tourist visa before traveling or returning to their home country to apply for a long-term visa. They also noted that all visa applications should now be done online.

If you’re back in Germany, and you have the time and ability to get to the Thai Embassy, the best option might be to apply for a 6-month Multi-Entry Tourist Visa. Being that you already have 3 Visa-on-Arrival stamps, you’ll effectively eliminate any risk of being turned away on your return or subsequent border runs.

Sorry

, according to the comment above from Brandon Thurkettle, this method is no longer available. Apparently all visa applications have to be made online now.

you cannot go to the embassy. It's all done online through the evisa system now and they do not allow anyone onto the property anymore.

Ahh my apologies, that shows how out of date I am!

It’s cheaper for you to apply for that ed visa from your own country. Contact the school and get it started now before you return.

Just go mate they don’t give a damn fuck about it

Did you overstay on the last stamp? States until 15 April but you departed 13 May.

no overstay, I had extended the visa by 30 days

There is no 180 day regulation.

You can enter with either method, but if you're worried about not having enough time to apply for an ED visa then you should apply for the tourist visa before you travel to Thailand. This will give you 60 days on arrival with a 30 day extension possible. As long as you start working with a school to get the ED visa as soon as you arrive then you should have enough time.

it’s 90 day in each year (30 days a time) * edit

if u wanna get in without visa.(only for some certain countries)

With visa, all those previous times with out visa will not be counted. You are on another ring

wrong. There's no rule about 90 days in 6 months.

yes now even harsher

the royal Thai police are the ones who make the decision to let you in, not the MFA.

Thanks for your answer.

I have found the following information. What is correct now? Here is explicitly something about the 90 and 180 days

the embassy doesn't make the rules about entering the country. That's up to immigration which is a completely different government agency. There is no 180 day rule.

immigration policy is quoted by the embassy web, sir
