Hello! I’m coming to Thailand via visa exemption at the end of July and plan to stay for as long as possible until the end of the year.

Currently, excluding the chance of a covid extension and border runs, I would at best have to leave by late September to get a proper tourist visa elsewhere. What would be the nearest or most accessible (flight cost, distance, etc.) Embassy/Consulate where I could apply for one? Phnom Penh, Manila, Kuala Lumpur? I am assuming that I cannot apply from Thailand.

Thanks!

TLDR : Answer Summary
The individual plans to enter Thailand on a visa exemption and is exploring options to extend their stay beyond the initial period. They are inquiring about the nearest locations where they can apply for a tourist visa, as they understand that applying for a visa from within Thailand is not allowed.

You cannot get a tourist visa from inside Thailand but why not get one for your first entry as extending it will give you 90 days without having to leave?

thanks. In the meantime, I had a look at the list of options and Penang is (relatively) close to Samui. So I guess Phnom Penh, Ho Chi Minh and Penang would probably be good candidates.

In that case, depending on the answer you get above, I would consider entering Thailand via Vietnam or Cambodia picking up a tourist visa in the process.

because there is no Thai embassy in the country I’m in and the e-Visa website directs me to go physically to a consulate.
