Do I need a return flight ticket when entering Thailand with a Non-Immigration ‘O’ Visa?

Hi Guys, I am entering Thailand with my authorised 90 day Non-Immigration ‘O’ Visa and will hopefully be converting same to a Retirement Visa once I am in Thailand! The one question I have is do I need a return flight ticket or will a one way ticket into Thailand be ok for me to pass through Immigration at Bangkok International Airport without any problems? Your advice is both welcome and appreciated. Many Thanks.

TLDR : Answer Summary
When entering Thailand on a Non-Immigration ‘O’ Visa, a return flight ticket is not required. Multiple comments indicate that one-way tickets are acceptable for passing through immigration. The focus should be on the visa type, which allows for a long-term stay through an extension rather than a conversion to a retirement visa. Expats can also look into purchasing temporary onward tickets for peace of mind, though it may not be necessary.

You can buy a temporary verifiable onward ticket online for just a few pounds / dollars at Best Onward Ticket (others are available) for your own peace of mind. It's valid for a couple of days and then gets cancelled automatically. It's a real ticket with a PNR number which can be checked by airlines, immigration etc.

he doesn’t need one if he is traveling on a Non oh Visa. No further travel proof required.

You don't need a return flight with a non O visa

Wording matters,it should read like this:

"I am entering Thailand on a 90-days single entry Non-Imm-O Retirement Visa, I shall get stamped in for a 90-days stay permit.

And will hopefully be converting this 90-days stay permit to a 1-year Extension of the Stay Permit based on being over 50/Retired "

NOTE: you do not convert to any “retirement visa”. The visa becomes invalid and “used” upon entering Thailand. Sadly Thai Immigration does not draw a difference between a stay permit and a visa. For them, in their inaccurate English, it is the same thing

And regarding your question: On a 90-days single entry Non-Imm-O Retirement Visa, you won’t be asked for proof of onward travel or a return ticket, by the airline.

If the check-in crew at the airport starts asking for this, demand to speak to the manager. As this Non-Imm visa-class is meant to get converted to a long term stay in Thailand, so there is no return ticket needed

thank you for your very clear explanation 😁👍

You already have the “retirement” visa so you won’t be converting anything. You will be applying for a 1 year extension of stay.

Immigration won’t question it, it’s usually the airline when you check in at your departure airport

There is no need for a "frugal living" in Thai, even for people on their state pensions from their home countries.

There is no meal that would cost more than 100 THB. Many would cost less, even half of that. Even with Thai wife, own home, Bangkok. No cooking at home, no way one can make it cheaper, tastier or more plentifull at home.

The most we ever did in our kitchen was - scrambled eggs or something as simple as that.

With 1,000 THB a day, two people can eat well 3 meals a day, even have 3 beers each in the evening. That goes to something like 30 US$ a day.

We pay no rent, our own 2 bedroom 11th floor condo with a large swimming pool.

Hi John, when are you getting to Bangkok? My husband and I are going to be there on the same O Visa on November 27th. Trying to find somebody else that's got the same timeline around us so we can help each other out

If you have the non-O visa, there is no requirement for proof of onward travel out of Thailand. One way travel is fine.

If one has a non-O visa 90 days and gets 1 year extension while in Thai, airline staff would hardly understand that. My Thai Airways from Nagoya (Japan) are mostly Japanese nationals (other airports world wide might be like that).

With 2 of 10 staff being Thai nationals, mostly supervising and stepping in if there is any dispute about visas. Will see in 2 weeks from now, with all the automation (self check-in terminals) and hardly any interraction with the check-in staff.

There is no way one could book a return flight for more than 12 months ahead, here we are talking 15 months. Or quite likely, even years.

No need for a return flight booking with Non-O visa to enter Thai.
