TLDR : Answer Summary
When applying for an O retirement visa to Thailand, travelers have varying experiences regarding the need for a return ticket. Many expats indicate that a one-way ticket suffices for long-term visas, as requirements may differ between embassies and airlines. However, it is suggested to consider booking a return ticket to avoid complications at check-in, although it's often not mandatory. Some have successfully entered Thailand on a one-way ticket without being asked for a return flight.

We recently (2 days ago) had problems at Schiphol airport as our return was 3 months and the woman on check in stated we could only have a months visa exemption! I explained the Thai embassy knew our flight details for CoE and never flagged. It took time and her colleagues messaging another colleague for them to agree that any overstay was our issue!! Had to bite my tongue to stay polite - but they were trying to get us to change date on our return flight before letting us board!
I had a return to my point of departure (portugal) but it was 3 months - she insisted we change our flight to return in a month! Thankfully I politely stood my ground as I was aware of the rules.
that is sometimes a problem at airports. The checkin people are not always up to date with the rules.Maybe almost impossible, get travellers to all over the world. I have had same kind of problems but asking fotr the supervisor is sometimes the easiest way\ to solve the problem.
if they are in a position to stop you getting on a plane they need to be up to date! I was very unimpressed with the power and lack of knowledge this woman had!

*All money you bring here is lost to you forever. This is a nation of immoral cheats, liars, con-artists. You will gain nothing positive from being here. If you dream of joining some woman here she is almost certainly in the arms of at least one other guy while you read this. Reconsider.
why you write such nonsense- when you have enough salary- you dont need

You dont need a return or onward ticket for a long term visa, although different embassies/airlines seem to think otherwise
You do need it for airlines and to enter the country. It's just that Thai Immigration rarely check. They did go through a clampdown a few years ago when you couldnt get in without some kind of onward travel. Most airlines want to see return or onward travel even with multi entry visas
Just checked IATA website and it says onward travel ticket required except for Nationals and residents. Having a long term visa is considered residence.
Emirates and Etihad my most used have never asked. Obviously some others are as you have experienced but it is certainly not a Thai government requirement
Only ever been stopped when on tourist visas (twice), when you can show a long term visa airlines have never been a problem they are covered then from liability.
The airlines ask to see a visa or a return ticket.
