I have read a couple of threads on now needing a police report when applying in country for a non-immigrant O visa in Penang and Vientiane. Is this likely to be the case at the Chaing Mai immigration office as well. Im a US citizen over 50 and intending to do a metv tourist visa and then applying for an O (im over 50) and an extension if i decide to retire. Also - how many times can i do border hop on METV?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The original poster inquires about the necessity of a police report for obtaining a non-immigrant O visa in Chiang Mai, based on requirements noted in Penang and Vientiane. Comments clarify that immigration offices in Thailand do not typically require such reports for in-country visa applications. Further, the conversation details how to maximize the duration of stay with a Multiple Entry Tourist Visa (METV), outlining a step-by-step approach to achieving a stay of roughly 9 months.

I am probably confused about validity of METV visa (6 months) and period of stay (60 days) or maybe what Im reading old document. . Can you share the "if you do it correctly" approach to get 9 months on METV ?

get the visa as close to the time you're comin' here as you can

The visa has a validity of 6 months from the date it's issued and you don't want to get it too early and burn down the validity NOT being here.

-When you arrive you be stamped in for 60 days

-when that runs out go to the border, stamp out&back in to get another 60 days

-when that runs out go to the border, stamp out&back in to get another 60 days

-Just prior to the "enter before" date on the VISA itself, go to the border, stamp out&back in getting a final 60 days (taking you to just about 240 days)

-extend that last entry by 30 days for 1900baht at the immigration office taking you to about 270 days or 9 months.

Yes i see - thank you. So i can buy/apply for a non immigrant O (not an O-A which can only be done at Consulate or embassy in my own country) in Chaing Mai without either a medical certificate of FBI/police report? Do i have that correct ?

correct (y) you can come in, max out the time you can get from the 6 month METV (which is about 9 months if you do it correctly) then a month before your last entry stamp runs out you go to the immigration office in Chiang Mai and apply to switch from a tourist visa to a 90 day Non-O visa based on being over 50 and by meeting the requirements. It will go under consideration for 21 days then you go back and get the Non-O visa and the 90 day stamp inked into your passport.

THEN when you have a month left on that stamp you go back to the immigration office and apply for a yearly extension of stay (and buy a re-entry permit too if you need one.

Immigration offices sell visas and extensions inside the country and are run by a division of the Royal Thai Police.

Thai consulates & embassies sell visas outside the country and are run by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Office.

The two agencies have nothing to do with each other.

No, it has nothing to do with immigration offices inside the country.
