Hi all, thanks for letting me join your group....i will be taking early retirement in October this year, I will be applying for a non immigrant 'O A' visa, I will apply at the Thai embassy in London, I have all the financial requirements already in place. I have to get a police check closer to the time, my question is do I only have to do this once, or each time I renew or extend the visa? I will be living with my girlfriend in khon kaen. Many thanks for any help and apologies if this question has been done to death before.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The NON-OA visa is valid for one year and allows unlimited entries into Thailand, each granting a year of stay. When renewing, a police clearance will be required each time you apply for a new visa, though if you extend from within Thailand, a police check is not necessary. It's advisable to plan your visa applications close to your arrival to maximize your stay.

That visa is good for a year from the date it's issued (so get it as close to when you're comin' here as you can). It is unlimited entry for the validity of the visa with each entry getting you stamped in for a whole year. Exiting and re-entering the country just before the VISA expires (a year from when you get it) will get you stamped into thailand for a whole new year <- giving you two years of stay out of a visa that's good for one year.

AFTER that you either apply for an in country yearly extension (which does NOT require a medical certificate or a police background check), by meeting the financial requirements at that time

OR

you go back to your country and buy a new O-A visa by meeting all the requirements again.

- we live in Khon Kaen and are on our second year of the OA visa we got from London. The advice Tod gives has been invaluable and we keep an eye on changes and adjustments. Enjoy your time in Thailand.

many thanks for your reply and also a quick response, I will use the initial visa to it’s maximum ( two years by leaving country) then I will after that apply in country.

You can’t extend the visa but you can get a new one each two years (if you time it right). You’ll need a police clearance each time at renewal. So behave 🙂.

thanks Stuart for your reply, I have a Bangkok bank account but don’t want to put that much money into it st the moment, eventually I will but if I get two years without having to do that then I’m happy

as Tod mentioned you can get an extension of stay based on being over 50 if you can meet the financial requirements in a Thai bank but many people just go back to their home country and get a new visa therefore bypassing the requirements to have funds in Thailand.
