TLDR : Answer Summary
No, you cannot apply directly for a one-year extension from a tourist visa in Thailand. You must first apply for an initial Non-O visa, which allows you to stay for 90 days. After obtaining the Non-O visa, you can then apply for the one-year extension.

Listen up people this isn't a debate on the pros and cons of getting the Non-O visa before you come here versus getting it once you arrive, NOR whether you can do it from a free entry or need a tourist visa to get the time to get your sh*t together to apply for the in country Non-O.
The O/P asked IF they can apply straight for the year extension from a tourist visa and that was answered by Ellie, NO you cannot, you must apply for the initial Non-O 90 day visa which you can do in country and then you can apply for the year extension.
We wish the O/P good luck we are done..

You cannot go straight from tourist entry to 1-year extension.
When you enter Thailand on a visa-exempt or tourist visa, you have to take a big two-step procedure. You need to go to your local immigration office for the latest requirements.
1: Apply for an initial in-country Non-O visa (for being a family member to a Thai or a foreigner who is on Non-B/Non-ED, being on retirement, etc) at your local immigration office (where your TM30 is registered) when you still have

days remaining with your current stamp
You need to go back to the immigration office after the "application under review" period to get the initial visa and permitted-to-stay stamp for 90 days in your passport.
2. Apply for a 1-year extension based on the same reason when you have less than

days with your first 90 days stamp remaining at your local immigration office.
Thanks for this chart. Just to double check. I don't have to have the B800,000 until it's time to apply for 1 year extension (i.e. I can use the 90 day stamp to set up bank account and transfer money into it)?
, You need to meet the financial requirement for an initial in-country visa which is having funds in a Thai bank account as of your application or an affidavit issued by your embassy. "No funds seasoning required" means, In the case of banked money, the specific period of funds in a Thai bank account is not required, but you need to have funds.
You need to meet all requirements for an initial in-country visa including funds. Check the latest requirements for an in-country visa at your local immigration office.
