I have the 800K in the Thai bank and will enter on a 60 day tourist visa. Can I get a one year extension of stay or do I first have to convert to a Non O at immigration?

TLDR : Answer Summary
To convert your 60-day tourist visa into a one-year extension of stay, you first need to obtain a Non-O visa. This can be done either by applying from your home country before entering Thailand or by converting your tourist visa to a Non-O at immigration. Be prepared to provide proof that the 800,000 THB in your Thai bank account came from abroad when applying for the visa change.

when applying for the "change of visa type" from the tourist visa to the 90-days Non-imm-O visa, you might be asked by immigration for the proof that the 800,000.- THB came from abroad

it’s been transferred over in small chunks over the past few years using wise. Hopefully should be ok

it depends on the specific Immigration. I remember in another group (Thai Visa Advice) there was mentioning that Immigration Jomtien doesn't require the proof the money came from abroad, however when you are about to apply for the change from the 90-days visa to the 1-year extension, they require a 3 (!) month seasoning period of the 800,000.- THB. It's good that you can meet this requirement

You have to have a non-O visa in order to apply for an extension. So you either need to apply for the non-O from home country before you come, or you'll need to convert at immigration.

I would get a non o except there is an insurance requirement in my country for both a non o and non oa

" I would get a non o except there is an insurance requirement in my country for a non o" . . . . . . . . gladly to say, then you probably missed that the 90-days health insurance requirement for application to the "90 days Non-imm-O retirement visa" has been discontinued

yet, insurance or not, I do not recommend flying to Thailand without a proper health insurance, be it mandatory or not

I’ve spent years in Thailand without health insurance it’s mostly a British and Euro thing for people that aren’t used to paying for healthcare

@John *******
yes, is is outdated. It is clearly written on the header

even if the embassy does want insurance, they only want minimal insurance for 90 days. A basic travel insurance policy would meet the requirements

ok what would the advantage be of having a non o vs. a tourist visa for my case of retirement? I can get the non o at immigration in Thailand.
Brandon ************
@John *******
the advantage is it's easier to open a bank account with a non-O visa. It's become almost impossible to open a bank account without an agent if you're on visa exempt or tourist visa.

technically no advantage (you DON'T need a 90-days insurance, you will find this out once you apply by the E-visa system). The financial proof however on immigration is 800.000.-THB instead of 10,000.- US$ . . . . . "Required documents to upload in the system (Large and clear JPEG or PDF format):

Passport Biodata Page (Must be valid within 6 months)

Photograph of the applicant, taken within the past six months.

Flight itinerary to Thailand. Itinerary must include the applicant's name, flight number, and date of traveling.

Checking or saving bank statements (every month in the past 3 months) with an ending balance of no less than $10,000 that shows the applicant name.

Passport pages containing all travel records for the past 12 months. "
