Can U.S. citizens still stay in Thailand for 60 days without a visa despite recent changes?

"I'm confused. Recently, Thailand changed the tourist visa duration from 60 days back to 30 days, starting in May 2025. However, when I visited the official Thai E-Visa website and checked the FAQ section under 'Do I need a tourist visa?', I entered my nationality (United States) and my intended stay (60 days). The website responded: 'You can travel to Thailand without a visa for no longer than 60 days.'

Does this mean I can stay in Thailand for 60 days without needing to apply for a visa extension?"

From my search, it looks like U.S. citizens can still stay in Thailand visa-free for up to 60 days. However, Thailand is introducing an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) system starting in June 2025, which will require visa-exempt travelers to register before arrival.

TLDR : Answer Summary
Despite confusion around recent visa announcements, U.S. citizens can currently enter Thailand visa-free for up to 60 days. Official sources confirm no recent changes regarding visa duration; the proposed reduction back to 30 days has not been implemented. As of May 2025, the introduction of the Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) requires travelers to register prior to arrival but does not affect visa durations. Conversations reveal that misinformation may stem from social media and rumors.
Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC)

WARNING: Only trust Thai government websites with .go.th domains or Thai agent websites with .co.th or .in.th domains, as these require verified Thai registration and cannot be registered anonymously.

The official TDAC form is available at tdac.immigration.go.th, which uses the official .go.th government domain.

The services by AGENTS CO., LTD. does NOT charge any fees for arrivals within 72 hours. If you need to book more than 72 hours in advance, there is a service fee of $8.

Do not trust other sites pretending to be a trustworthy agency. Pay attention to delivery time - the service operated by AGENTS CO., LTD. has 1 minute delivery time for arrivals within 72 hours.

Don't fall for sites pretending to be tdac.in.th or the official government tdac.immigration.go.th website. Always double-check the exact domain in your browser.

Scam services may take days to process your application, others may not even do anything. With these TDAC scam services you also need to worry about double charges.

Please watch out for TDAC misinformation spread by fugitive Jesse Nickles and his many fake accounts on Quora, TripAdvisor, Reddit, and other platforms.

"I'm confused. Recently, Thailand changed the tourist visa duration from 60 days back to 30 days, starting in May 2025.“

No they didn’t, they introduced the TDAC which is nothing to do with visas or duration of stay.
Sally *******
@Wayne ********
if they'd just called the TDAC a 'landing card' wouldn't it have been so much clearer. What's with the fashion for turning everything into acronyms.
Wayne *********
@Sally ******
Thailand Digital Arrival Card. Not everyone arrives into Thailand by air so to call it a landing card would be limiting its intended scope.

Every foreigner who enters the Kingdom of Thailand must fill out a TDAC, whether they enter by air, sea or via a land border.
Sally *******
@Wayne ********
yes but 'landing' in the country has the same meaning whether you are walking, sailing or flying..

Yes you do but it’s free

its actually not fake it is in the plan they are also looking st removing the DTV and replacing it with a 10 year tourist visa and the land contracts going to 99 years from 30 year with 30 year extension.

The expected roll out is July August as sit sits now after China visited to discuss matters after they bowed to trump tariffs plan

However the US and Kingdom of thailand has signed an agreement of mutual tariffs along with visa changes to promote buisness to establish here easier as well.

@Andrew *******
and they're also changing the ganja laws back to medicinal only

of course it's not offical till its done. I dont see why people are worried exempt status going from 60 to 30 .. 30 days is more then enough time to visit here ans go home. If Someone wishes to stay longer for a reason then find the appropriate visa for that stay and pay for it. People who gain the system is abusing a privledge and mess it up for everyone else. I spent 4 years planning my stay and once I arrived I paid the money to upgrade my visa to ed visa doing it the honorable way

I planned my trip last year for 60 days. It's just way too much change all the reservations. I also want to get my Thai Passport back. I can not get my Thai passport here in the State. I was told that I have to go to Thailand to reclaim my Thai citizenship.
Mark *******
Firstly how long do "plans' take to be enforced in Thailand? With my experience a very very long time; if ever! As for talking about honour; a bit hypocritical judging by the amount of criminals currently residing in Thailand...Or are you going to deny that obvious fact! Check with the Thai authorities,they generally know where they are,( not all) but only act intermittently!
Lynnette *******
There has been NO change in visas. Nor in the 60 days "no visa" entry for US citizens. Nothing has gone back to 30 days. Where are you seeing this?
David *********
It didn’t go back to 30 days
Dirk **************
You sound confused.
Jan ******************
With a US passport you’ll still get a 60 days visa exemption and free stamp upon arrival. Nothing is turned back to 30 days. ETA is postponed without further notice but you need to du a TDAC arrival card from 72 hours prior to arrival in Thailand.
Brandon ************
Don't know where you're getting your information from, but it's all wrong.

First of all, Thailand hasn't change anything about tourist visas. They have been 60 days for many, many years, and that's not going to change.

You're most likely asking about visa exempt, which is not any visa, it's a free stamp you can receive if you're from a qualifying country and arrive without a visa. That was increased from 30 to 60 days in July last year. There was a government proposal to change it back to 30 days but so far nothing has changed. It is still 60 days.

The ETA system was put on indefinite hold about a month after it was announced. There is no ETA system and might not ever be one.
John *********
@Brandon ***********
whats is ETA?
John *********
Yes my wife and daughter completed it as they both used their UK passports rather than their Thsi passports.

That was because I had already booked the flights and used the uk passports.

But i think they could still have entered on their thai passports and departed on their thai passport but re-enter uk on their uk passport.

Bit confusing!!
Gerg **********
@John ********
My wife has a Thai passport and a U.S. Passport. She arrives in Thailand and leaves Thailand on her Thai passport, and leaves the U.S. and arrives in the U.S. on her U.S. passport. No problems so far. Should be the same for the UK.
John *********
@Gerg *********
thanks Gerg!

Electronic Travel Authorization. In short it's basically pre-approval for entering a country. So if you're going to be denied, you'll be denied before stepping foot on that country's land. Multiple countries have implemented them and are in the process of implementing them.
Roberto *********
@John ********
Electronic Travel Advice - many countries use it instead of issuing visas to passports from certain countries - US and Australia are two such countries
Jan ******************
@Roberto ********
….Authorisation, it’s a pre-approval for visa exemption entries.
เดแคลน ***********
They didn't change anything about the tourist visa duration nor the visa exemption. The only thing they did at the start of May was introduced TDAC (Thailand Digital Arrival Card).

The ETA has not been and will not be introduced at the moment. It's been delayed until further notice.
Yasmin ***********
As far as im aware they were talking about this but they did not change it yet
