TLDR : Answer Summary
Americans can enter Thailand visa-free for 60 days, and they have options to extend their stay. They can extend their visa exemption by an additional 30 days at a Thailand immigration office for 1,900 baht or leave the country and re-enter for another 60 days. However, travelers are cautioned that Thai immigration is stricter on those frequently using visa exemptions to live in Thailand, so it's advisable to have proper documentation and not to appear as if they are abusing the entry system. There are speculations that the rules may change, reverting back to only allowing 30-day extensions, so keeping up with news is recommended.

Another 60 days but they may revert to 30 days soon, keep watching for news updates. However following the big drop in bookings after the earthquake, they might have to rethink their logic ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿฟโ€โ™€๏ธ

yes but get the 30-day extension first. As immigration are cracking down on visa exempt entries especially in airports i suggest using a border bounce company for your 2nd one (hopefully you don't have excessive Visa Exempt entries) if you have andxare pulled aside have

1. 20k baht cash in your pocket.

2. Proof of address of stay .

3. Proof of onward travel from Thailand.

I stay 6 months doing that. Actually 5.5 months until going to Los Angeles.

@Robert ****
and this is why the thai immigration are changing back to 30 day visa exempt

Because people are abusing the system

Do the right thing and get a proper visa

At some time they will refuse you enter and I hope they do

hold your horses, in no way is that an indication of abuse of the system ... You are a bit over the top with your opinion that is baseless when compared to the true people who are abusing the system ... Phen alai ๐Ÿ˜…๐Ÿ˜…

no proper visa for people under 50. Education visa donโ€™t support the lifestyle sought out by coming to Thailand. And obviously elite visa is financially unwise.

@Sam *******
you can get a MTV valid for 6 months just need to leave the country every 60 days don't need insurance or a bank account

and can be extended

isnโ€™t that beyond ridiculous? Being in Thailand 20 years, have Thai wife, pay Thai taxes and they still F you with visa requirements and fees.

And you wonder why part time visitors rides visa exemption wave?

You can either extend your current visa exemption 1 time by 30 days at any Thailand immigration office with payment of 1900 Baht and the additional 30 days is added to the end date of your initial 60 day exemption entry..

Or you can leave the country and re-enter for an additional 60 days

Or you could do both..

Extend your current exemption and then before the extension expires you leave Thailand and return for another 60 days..

You should be aware that Thai immigration are cracking down on people who are regularly entering and exiting Thailand simply to gain another exemption.

You may get away with it once but I wouldn't push my luck too much.

If you appear to be abusing the visa exemption entries to effectively live in Thailand (Not a genuine tourist) then you may be refused entry at the border.

@Baz ********
so if I re-enter the country after having extended my visa in Thai immigration office, I canโ€™t go back and extend it again for another 30 days, Right?
Baz *********
@Bartosz ******
Each time you enter it's a new visa exemption entry for 60 days..

When you exit Thailand your current exemption is terminated and canceled..

So each time you enter you are starting again on a new exemption entry

And each 60 day visa excemption entry can be extended only once by 30 days at any Thailand immigration office.

thank You very much.

so retirement expats are not welcome in Thailand

@Mike *****
just contact Thai visa Centre and get 15mo multiple entry on arrival pay the fee it will take a few days. And $1500 US dollars and you all set if your planning to stay longer than a few trips.
Baz *********
@Mike *****
He wasn't asking about a retirement visa which is open to anyone over 50 who can meet the financial criteria..

His question was about visa exemptions which are specifically intended for genuine tourists and not people trying to abuse the system in order to live in Thailand.

@Mike *****
They are welcomed as long as they are spending and contributing to the economy

Yes it's possible to return for another 60 day stamp, you can also extend the current free visa exempt entry stamp another 30 days at immigration for 1900 baht
