TLDR : Answer Summary
A U.S. passport holder can stay in Thailand for 60 days without needing a visa, under the visa-exempt entry rule. Additionally, they can extend their stay for another 30 days for a fee of 1900 THB if needed. There's some confusion with E-visas and visa on arrival; however, Americans do not require a visa on arrival as they are granted 60 days free entry.

pleased to see your entry. Although a very frequent visitor, I’ve been wondering if what you say is the case, similar as we could with the 30 day exemption, extended a further 30days by exiting & re entering.

Despite all my comings & goings to Thailand, I’ve always found so much confusion re the many Visa’s applicable, & so many conflicting opinions.

Completely wrong information. The 2 options for Americans are either 60 day free visa exempt entry (which is NOT a visa on arrival. Visa on Arrival is a different entry scheme where some nationalities must PAY to buy a visa on arrival granting a 15 day stay). OR Americans can buy a tourist visa/e-visa that also grants the exact same 60 day stay. There is no 90 day e-visa. The visa has a validity period of 90 days to use it to enter the country, but grants a 60 day stay once used. Both visa exempt entries and tourist visas can be extended 1 time to get the extra 30 days. In most cases, there is no reason for an American to get a tourist visa since a free visa exempt entry grants the exact same length of stay.

Wrong. Evisa for a tourist visa is $40. Absolutely no point in applying for one as a US passport gets a free visa exempt entry for 60 days anyway.

You are possibly confusing that the visa would be valid for 90 days, but the entry stamp is for 60 days.

There are other visas that are 90 days but they require specific things that a tourist visa wouldn’t. Like being over 50, married to a Thai or having a Thai child.

Yup 60 day visa exempt and can extend 30 more. After that would need a border run from what I understand. I don't know max per year though.
