TLDR : Answer Summary
Yes, Thai passport holders can visit the UK by obtaining a Visitor Visa. They need to demonstrate a reason to return to Thailand, such as employment or property ownership, and show they have sufficient funds to support themselves during their stay. Although there is no specific visa for visiting friends, a general visitor visa can suffice if they meet the necessary criteria. It is advisable to check the UK government website for detailed requirements and paperwork necessary for the application.

Getting the visa is likely to be the hardest part, as it's 'out-sourced' to a commercial company (like many traditional civil service functions) and with no 'appeal' possible there is a perverse incentive to deny, thereby generating another application fee. 😡

You need to look on your own country's government website. Your not the first person to attempt this.

Cheaper and much quicker to get on a rubber boat at Calais, it's free travel, free hotel, free food and you don't need any health insurance once you arrive that's free as well.

Of course, just get a visit visa approved. They need UK sponsor, evidence of funds, or financial sponsors confirmation, full itinerary and reason to return to Thailand (no 1 issue). UK Immigration website covers all the requirements and there's a checklist on there somewhere

Of course they can. They need to apply for a UK Visitor visa. To get one, they will need to show a reason to return to Thailand (like a job) and enough money to finance their trip. A letter of invitation from the friends will help, but is not necessary if they are genuine tourists. Thousands of Thais visit the UK for a holiday.

Is France any easier?

If it is there's plenty of boats crossing the English Channel full of people without the necessary visa or documentation.

As I'm typing this I'm realizing that this is sad but true.

Anyway, yes, with the appropriate tourist visa.

The number of boats crossing the English Channel by immigrants has fluctuated significantly in recent years. In 2023, over 45,000 people crossed the Channel in small boats, according to the UK Home Office. This marked a continuing rise from previous years, with numbers increasing since 2018.

In terms of daily or weekly numbers, it can vary depending on the weather and other factors, but it's not uncommon to see dozens of boats attempting the dangerous crossing on a single day, especially during the warmer months. The UK and French governments have been working to curb these crossings, but the problem persists due to the high demand for asylum in the UK and the relative ease of making the crossing compared to other routes into Europe.
