Hi, I have a retirement visa and my husband is my dependent who will turn 50 in June. His dependent visa is valid till December. Can he apply for his own retirement visa when he turns 50 in June? We just need to make sure our funds are sufficient to meet the requirements.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The person inquiring has a retirement visa and their husband is a dependent who will turn 50 in June. They want to know if he can apply for his own retirement visa when he reaches 50, ensuring they meet the financial requirements. Community members respond with advice on the necessary financial criteria, the process of applying for a new visa, and alternatives such as him possibly exiting the country to start the application process. They discuss whether he can split the expiration of their respective visas and suggest consulting with the immigration office for the specific steps and potential complications.

I’m not sure why you’d want to. Doubles the funds needed or relies on juggling funds from one account to another with expert timing. If you have a “retirement visa” /extension of stay based on being over 50 he can piggyback off the back of that.

Another thing you might be able to do is you get your extension and he gets his based on being married to you. THEN 6 months later he goes to the immigration office wiht the correct documentation, cancels the extension he's on (based on marriage to a foreigner on a long stay extension) and immediately apply for a new yearly extension based on him being 50.. I don't know if an immigration office will do it or not. BUT in theory it would work because he's changing the reason for his extension.

I'd certainly ask at the immigration office before you try it though..

Good Luck

IF your two extensions (yours based on retirement and his based on being married to someone who has a long stay extension) expire at the same time then you're not gonna be able to do it.

The only way to do that would be to have your husband exit the country without a re-entry permit, which would cancel his current extension. Then he could either get a 90 day single entry Non-O visa at a thai consulate nearby based on being over 50. OR he could enter on a 30 day visa exempt entry and then apply for the 90 day Non-O inside the country at the immigration office.

After that he could apply for the yearly extension of stay.

That's the only way you'll be able to "split" the two extensions you have now by the 6 months you need to juggle the funds

Thank you Robert. We will need 6 months between our applications to move the money from 1 account to another to meet the requirements for both of us .

If he want to apply at the Immigration Office he need a minimum of 800.000 Thb on a Thai bank account on his name for the period of at least 2 months prior the application till at least 3 months after application date and the rest of the year not less than 400.000 Thb.

Retirement based on over 50

What kind of retirement visa are you talking about?

If he want to have his own Visa or his own Extension of Stay he need to meet the financial requirements requested for it. As different kinds of visa and the Extension of Stay is called a "retirement" visa, I can not tell you the requirement needed.
