Re Extension of Visa due to Circumstances in the Gulf and the recent notice from Thai Immigration re overstays and extensions.
Does this apply to people on all Visas?
A friend is on a working visa that will shortly expire and won't be renewed. Presumably he cannot extend his working visa as he won't be continuing to work. Does he have any other options with regards to extending whilst these special circumstances are in place regarding the Gulf and travel?
It seems like we might be going into a situation similar to COVID. Note he is British and the British Embassy will not be issuing letters to support extensions. The British Embassy rarely does anything to help British citizens.... compared to other countries.
Adding... after reading a reply to make the post more specific. He hasn't had a flight cancelled and doesn't have one booked. His working visa expires on March 20th.
Thanks in advance.

TLDR : Answer Summary
A British citizen with a soon-to-expire work visa in Thailand is unsure about options for extension due to special circumstances in the Gulf region. Key points discussed include the inability to extend a work visa if not continuing employment, the importance of having a canceled flight to qualify for extensions offered by immigration, and alternative options such as border runs to obtain a tourist visa. Comments emphasize that if flights are still operating and no cancellations occur, the individual may not be eligible for an immigration extension.
Unfortunately he’s not stuck do to flight cancellations so his best bet is to head to a neighboring country but he’ll need to make sure he cancels his WP and extension then he could possibly return on an exempt stamp or buy a visa
Surely there's nothing stopping him leaving, so doubt immigration can help. Could he fly to a nearby country and reenter visa exempt for 60 days plus 30 day extension? Meanwhile book a flight home for 3 months ahead of this.
Pardon me if this sounds stupid but he hasn't booked a flight to UK and although there is some disruption flights are still going to the UK so how is he impacted by the gulf problem. Immigration is helping people who's flights have been cancelled not people who haven't even bothered to book flights, I really don't think he will be offed an extension. I would also think that the British Embassy doesn't have to 'help' someone that hasn't even tried to return to UK.
Malcolm Whitlock think many just assume that since Doha being a msin hub and now closed airspace there are no other flights. But for example Thailand to China then.onto UK.
Immigration has offered „stranded” tourists generous 30-day extensions.
To be elegible, people must prove that their return flight was canceled.
However, this doesn't mean you can stop looking for available flights once the extension is granted. On the contrary, Immigration will certainly expect you to take care of this.
This particular 30-day extension isn't meant to last forever. It's designed to prevent you from overstaying your visa.
More precisely, you're given 30 days to find a replacement flight. Immigration will rightfully assume you'll be able to do so.
You can most likely only present your canceled flight ticket once when applying for the extension. It probably won't be accepted for a subsequent extension.
We should keep this in mind. Please check if immigration includes the canceled flight number in the extension stamp, as that would confirm my suspicion.
It's important to know that embassies do not issue confirmations of canceled flights. Immigration is operating under an unrealistic assumption that this is possible.
A proof that the flight was canceled should be sufficient.
Steve James Immigration has offered „stranded” tourists generous 30-day extensions.
To be elegible, people must prove that their return flight was canceled. Your friend cannot present a canceled flight, this means his only option is canceling his work permit and his Non-B permit and exit Thailand. he has the option to return visa-exempt and receive a 60-days admitted stay inlcuding the option to extend with 30 more days
Well its only a problem in the gulf area, not Thailand so what are the options avoiding the gulf.UAE is still having flights out. AirChina and ANA still doing Thailand to UK
Steve James if you have read the announcement carefully. It says that special 30-days extensions are only issued to people who can prove that their flights have been cancelled (no embassy confirmation needed!). Since your friend cannot comply with this, he still has the option to cancel his work permit, get his Non-B visa or extension cancelled and afterwards do a border run and re-enter Thailand visa-exempt. He would get stamped in for 60 days and he even could get a 30-days extension on top of that. He has plenty of time to arrange for a flight or arrange another job opportunity
Nongnuch Kamdee thanks. I did read it but not carefully enough or perhaps wishful thinking as tourist numbers are down. Sorry for wasting everyone's time and thanks for all the replies. Mods please close the thread. Thanks
