TLDR : Answer Summary
To apply for a UK passport for your daughter born in Thailand, you can use her Thai birth certificate accompanied by an official English translation. A British birth certificate is not needed to demonstrate her UK citizenship, as long as you are her British parent and your name is on the Thai birth certificate. Both parents' birth certificates or IDs may be required, and proof of your relationship is necessary. The application can be made at the British Embassy, but you should check the most recent guidelines on their website.

If she is in Thailand you must apply from Thailand, likewise if she's in the UK you apply from the UK.

The process is straightforward no need for an agency.

Thai documents will need to be translated. The passport is processed in Hong Kong (I think, unless it's recently changed).

Her rights to UK citizenship is done through you, and therefore you need to provide the correct supporting documents (passport, birth certificate - the long one etc, the application form will tell you).

The mother also has to provide her details / passport and a signed declaration that she agrees to the process. I just made this on a word document which included a scan of her passport and a sentence that read something like"I (her name) agreed to my daughter (name) applying for a UK passport. Dated/signed

Something like that.

Talk to this lady. We have just got my little girl a uk passport. She will do all the translation work from your girls Thai birth certificate and process it all for you. Very reasonable too

You will need the Thai BC translated in to English then Submitt the paper work both you and your partners BC's all translated if need to be..

You DO NOT NEED yo be married ..I did this with both my Children the British Conulate section were very good all done and sorted in less than a 3 weeks..Birth registration certs and UK passports .. you just have to show you are a couple in a civil partnership..

?? NZ passport (paper work) all done online, when finished sent through DHL

You use the Thai birth certificate (together with an official translation, which the hospital actually helped me obtain). I actually have a son and 2 daughters all born abroad and all with dual-citizenship… My eldest daughter (10 years old, born in Thailand), plus my son (13 years old also born in Thailand), required a UK birth certificate first, and this demonstrated UK citizenship which was then used to apply for a UK passport. Application was made for both through the British Embassy in Bangkok using their internal postal system to the UK

However rules changed approx 7 years ago, so when I followed the same process for my youngest (2 years old, born in Malaysia), I was told possession of a UK birth certificate no longer indicated British citizenship, and so I needed to forward the foreign birth certificate, and the decision on granting UK citizenship is now made during the UK passport application. All applications are now done online to the UK (to limit fraud apparently), with paperwork sent via DHL afterwards together with a generated application code. There is actually no longer a requirement to have a UK birth certificate, but probably helps to have one anyway. A proper ball-ache sorting everything out; 2 of my kids actually have 3 birth certificates and 2 passports, but the dual citizenship gives them a lot of extra opportunities for work and residency when they’re older.

I actually still have the reply in my email from the UK passport office in Liverpool clarifying the above if you’d like me to pm it to you.

An interesting note to remember when discussing things with your daughter when she’s older, with UK citizenship, I was told if she lives in the UK when she is older and has children born there, they will automatically be granted UK citizenship, however if she is living abroad with a foreign partner and has children while abroad, they are no longer automatically granted UK citizenship although they can make an application. That rule has been place since before my son was born.

Hope that all helps 🙏

Perhaps register birth abroad at British embassy. The correct information may be on embassy website.

My daughter born in Thailand has a Thai and British passport.

You can't even get a British birth certificate. You can apply for a "registration certificate", but it's not needed for anything like passport etc. Info on the website is good and the Embassy are good at replying to emails about it.

It depends ... where you were born is also a factor

it’s not always so simple

Hone office website is the best place to start reading up

You just apply for her UK passport via VFS in Sukhumvit soi 13. You will need a translation of her Thai birth certificate (showing your name) but it does not have to be stamped by the Thai MFA. Most importantly you need YOUR long-form birth certificate showing that you are British Otherwise Than By Descent. You will also need the mother's passport/birth certificate/ID and, if you're married, your wedding certificate (translated if in Thai).

You will need a certified translation of the Thai birth certificate into English. You can get this at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Then you will need to get it legalized at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Finally, you will need to get it legalized at the British Embassy. Now you bring your daughter along with the legalized translation to the British Embassy and apply for British Passport for her.
Nick ****************
Did I read somewhere about DNA tests? Is that to do when your name is not on the birth certificate?

that's rubbish just done my daughter's passport just aslong as yr name is on Thai birth certificate it's fine .just get it translated to english
Henrik ****
@Gary *******
, of course, your name needs to be listed as her father. The legalizations are standard procedures for any country. If you are lucky to get the passport, then you/she might very well run into problems later on. If the translation is not 100% correct and not legalized, then you are submitting false information.

@Henrik ***
That is NOT correct for UK passports. There is no luck involved. Either you (as the British parent) are eligible to pass on your citizenship, or you're not. As stated earlier, the Thai MFA do not have to legalise the Thai birth certificate. It is checked when you submit the application and documents at the HMPO office at VFS in Bangkok.

@Henrik ***
I'm afraid that is not the correct procedure for a child's first UK passport.
Bruce *********
Of course you have to prove she is a British citizen to get a British passport. And hope you are legally married to your Thai partner and your name is on the birth certificate.

No need to be married, yes your name on certificate, they also put my passport number on it as well.

Thailand don't allow duel citizenship I think either so you might want to look Into that aswell

Ross Rowe Ross you are wrong there my son is dual nationality Thai British.
J ******************
My Grand Neice born in Australia has dual nationality her Mum a Thai by birth is also dual national.
Michael *******
Ross Rowe Yes, Thai citizens are allowed to have dual nationality and own two passports. If you are born in Thailand and have at least one Thai parent, you automatically have Thai nationality and can apply for a Thai passport. However, if you are only half-Thai and were born and raised aboard, and do not have Thai nationality, you can still get a Thai passport, but must contact the District Office that your Thai parent is registered at and have your name added to the Thai House
Jason ******
My daughter is both Thai and Australian. Holds both citizenships
Rob **********
Ross Rowe Of course Thailand allows dual citizenship, my wife and our daughters have it.
