Can I use my Covid/Amnesty visa for reentry into Thailand or should I apply for a multi-entry visa instead?

I leave Thailand to the USA and return on the 12th of January. I currently have a Covid/Amnesty visa that’s good until January 31st.

1) Can I get the reentry permit before I leave and then get back into Thailand on my original Covid/amnesty visa?

2) Can I get the multi entry visa in the USA and then do a border hop with it like pre Covid times?

3) if I can get the multi entry visa, then will they force me to use that when I enter Thailand and not allow me to continue on my previous visa? (A.k.a. I shouldn’t bother paying the 1000 baht for re-entry because I won’t be able to use it)

Thank you in advance! This group is truly the best and I don’t know how I could function in this country without it! Thank you for all that you do!

Also I apologize in advance if I got some of the terms wrong, which I most likely did

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user inquired about reentering Thailand with a Covid/Amnesty visa and whether they could obtain a reentry permit or a multi-entry visa before returning. Responses clarified that the Covid extension becomes void upon leaving Thailand, making a reentry permit useless. Instead, they recommended acquiring a Multiple Entry Tourist Visa (METV) from the U.S., as it allows for multiple entries and could provide more flexibility compared to the current visa. A Single Entry Non Immigrant B visa was also suggested as a viable option.

Thank you!!!!! I think I’m gonna look into the single entry visa. Seems like the best option for what I need.

Thank you!! ❤️❤️❤️

Even if you don't get any visa in the USA, you will be stamped for 30days on a visa-exempt scheme entering Thailand on 12th Jan, longer than the rest of your current covid extension.

Why even bother to think about re-entry on that...

I'd say your best bet would be get a 6 month METV (your posting history shows you had that before) from the thai consulate in the US using the online evisa system.

That visa (at least in theory) will buy you almost 9 months of stay by bouncing out and in.

Hopefully with the new year the nearby countries will open the land borders making bouncing out and back easier OR at least you can fly out and back to countries that are open as long as you meet the entry requirements to get in the country you're bouncing to and then back in to thailand when you return. 🙂

At this time with the thousands of people here on covid extensions there are exactly ZERO reports of ANYONE who is on a covid extension being able to get a re-entry permit, leave and come back on it.

Keep in mind you get covid extensions based on "inability to travel" SO you leaving and wanting to come back kinda negates the reason for you to have a covid extension dontcha think?

For the new visa, easy way is a new Single Entry Non Immigrant B visa, get the 90 days on entry and then apply for the 1 year Extension of Stay at Immigration. No border runs and stress of where to go.

Keep in mind the covid extension is NOT a visa. It's a concessional extension designed to tide you over until you are able to leave. As Benjamin has said, once you leave, its purpose is served

A person receives a 60 day extension of stay based on unable to travel due to COVID-19 because they are unable to travel due to COVID-19. If you are able to travel due to COVID-19, then the extension of stay becomes void when you leave.

>2) Can I get the multi entry visa in the USA and then do a border hop with it like pre Covid times?

Is this a multiple entry tourist (METV) visa? If the borders are reopen, and the Thai consulate sells the METV, then yes.

>if I can get the multi entry visa, then will they force me to use that when I enter Thailand and not allow me to continue on my previous visa?

From your post, you do not have a visa; you have a 60 day extension of stay based on unable to travel due to COVID-19. If you acquire a multiple entry tourist visa, the 60 day extension of stay based on unable to travel due to COVID-19 is automatically voided, and you will enter on the multiple entry tourist visa.

Remember, on a 6 month multiple entry tourist visa, you are stamped into Thailand for 59 days on each entry, and you can get ONE 30 day extension of stay based on tourism.
