What do we need to provide for the METV visa application for Thailand if we plan to travel in and out several times?

My husband and I, US citizens, will be traveling to Chiang Mai on November 29 and hope to stay until March or April. We have been looking through the group posts daily and would like clarification regarding Visas.

We want to travel to neighboring countries during our stay in CM and understand that with an METV we can travel in/out of Thailand multiple times. Our question is, when applying for an METV with the Thai embassy (in US), do we need to show one set of entering/leaving Thailand or multiple proofs of travel in and back into Thailand to ensure they grant us the METV? Do we need to show the same proof of travel to Thai Immigration when initially arriving in Thailand? We understand that the airlines want to see onward travel when departing the US. Does Thai Immigration care?

If we get a SETV do we have to stay in Thailand for 60 days before we can travel out and back into the country? In this case what proof of travel do we need to show the Thai Embassy (in US) when getting our visas? Do we need to show the same proof of travel to Thai Immigration when we arrive in Thailand? We understand that the airlines want to see onward travel when departing the US. Does Thai Immigration care?

We understand we can get extensions on both visas to stay longer in Thailand.

One last question, is there an advantage to going to the Thai Embassy in US to apply for our Visas instead of doing an E-Visa?

We hope we are clear in our questions.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is seeking clarification on the requirements for obtaining a Multiple Entry Tourist Visa (METV) for Thailand, specifically regarding proof of travel when applying at the Thai embassy in the US and upon arrival in Thailand. They inquire about necessary documentation for both METV and Single Entry Tourist Visa (SETV) and whether Thai Immigration checks onward travel proof. Comments indicate that to apply for an METV, proof of multiple travel itineraries is needed, but Thai Immigration is less likely to verify this upon arrival.

If you get an METV you can leave and enter Thailand an unlimited number of times during the 6 months the visa is valid, and you will get a stamp for 60 days in Thailand every time you enter.

In order to apply for this visa, as part of your application, you need to send proof of the following:

1) A flight from the United States to Thailand

2) A flight out of Thailand within 60 days of flight #1

3) Another flight into Thailand within the 6 months validity of the visa

This shows proof that you need to enter Thailand multiple times. If you apply for METV without providing this, they will issue you a single entry tourist visa and will keep the difference in the price.

When checking in for your flight to Thailand, your airline may require you to show proof of leaving Thailand within the number of days you'll be stamped in for. So if you are arriving on a tourist visa, they may require you to show proof of leaving Thailand within 60 days. Thai immigration is not likely to ask you about this.

If you already know you plan on traveling out of Thailand, then there's no reason to not book your flight to Thailand, your flight to your first destination out of Thailand and your flight back to Thailand from that destination. You can then use these flights for your visa application.

Thank you Brandon. We want to stay put in CM for a month or so before starting to travel, therefore, we don't know when or where we will be going yet. In regard to your last paragraph, we have a one way ticket to CM for
*****
. Since we need to show additional travel as well, as you mentioned, can we use tickets from a source such as Onward Travel or OneWayFly.com to show the balance of travel for our Visa application? In addition, since a Visa application can take up to 2 weeks (or more) to process, will the 'Onward ticket still be viable? It sounds like I will have to purchase additional 'Onward Travel' tickets to show to the airline when we leave in November.

yes you can use onward travel tickets to satisfy the visa application requirements as well as the airline requirements if they want to see an exit from Thailand.
