Anyone flown to Vietnam for the purpose of returning for a 45 visa exempt entry, and just stayed in the airport waiting for their same day return flight to Thailand ?
Or have you got to exit the airport and get stamp in your passport.?

TLDR : Answer Summary
It is necessary to exit the airport and get a stamp in your passport to qualify for a new visa exempt entry into Thailand after flying to Vietnam. Simply staying in the airport will not suffice. Additional considerations include the need for a visa prior to departure for those whose countries do not have arrival exemptions, and prior travel history may lead to extra scrutiny upon returning to Thailand.
Make sure you have your visa ahead of time if your country doesn't have an exemption on arrival. The airline I flew on decided to put me on the flight even though I didn't have a visa for entry at the time. It was a long wait and they charged $180 USD for an emergency visa for 30 days. I only spent 24 hours or so there. I love Thailand and it really wasn't my vibe. USA residents needed a visa when I went.
that's fine as far as Thailand is concerned. You might need to see how early they will let you cross security again since you'll have to exit the secure area to get stamped into the country.
