TLDR : Answer Summary
When entering Thailand on a visa-exempt stamp that allows a stay of 45 days, your flight out of the country generally needs to be scheduled before the expiration of that period. While airlines may enforce this policy to ensure compliance with immigration regulations, travelers have noted that immigration officials often do not request to see a return or onward ticket. It is also possible to apply for a 30-day extension of stay before the initial 45 days expire. Having a changeable return ticket or a cheap refundable ticket can help satisfy airline policies.

same, they've never asked me for a return ticket and I've been visiting a lot during the last 9 years, sometimes up to 4 times calendar year with 2-3 months duration per visit.

Would a cheap refundable mini van ticket out of the country before the 45 days is up keep the airline happy?

Once in Thailand, cancel van, get 30 day extension….

I don't get their logic. Do they honestly think someone intending to overstay will be "defeated" by buying a cheap onward ticket.?

I have also gotten away by simply checking in to my flight online, to avoid contact with a counter-agent

technically they can demand an air ticket, but many will accept train or bus ticket. I'm not sure if they would accept van ticket though.

Usually yes. Your airline may insist. Immigration probably won’t ask.

really depends on the airline. Some insist others don’t. You can always buy a throw away cheap one way ticket out or even a train or bus ticket showing you are leaving the country.

you wouldn't need to redo, just book another ticket out inside the 45 days... Then cancel it.

, your departure flight would have to be before the end of your arrival conditions, which in this case would be the 45 days. (Doesn't matter what you plan to do after you actually arrive.)
