Can I open a bank account in Thailand under my name for a Non-O visa and transfer funds from my wife's account?

Hi all.

I think i know the answer to my question but would like confirmation please.

I will come on a Non O visa (marriage) next year. We are coming over in February and need a bank account which will be in my wife's name. I know we can't have a joint bank account to show the money for my extension. But can I transfer it to my account when I've opened it.

Secondly can I bring cash over to put into my account once opened. Coming from my UK bank. Pensions. I will probably keep the 400k in a separate account and not touch it.

Thanks for the information in advance.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is seeking clarification on bank account requirements related to a Non-O visa for marriage in Thailand. They plan to have a bank account in their wife's name for initial use but want to know if they can later transfer funds to their personal account. They also inquire about bringing cash from the UK for deposit. Comments confirm that it’s generally necessary for the bank account to be in the applicant's name for visa extensions, although some exceptions exist for joint accounts. Additionally, transferring funds from their wife's account to their own after account opening is permissible.

Yes you can do that and then transfer to your account once you have opened one

Think the money may need to show as an international transfer you should check.

Why would you open the accounting your wife's name? If you are applying for a Non-O instead country you are in now it will make it a little easier to open your own account in your name only.

keep in mind - any application 1-year extension you get out of a 90-days Non-Imm-O Family visa will need to be annually repeated, and the extension will begin on the day when the initial 90-days stay permit expires. And you will keep this date in the coming future. So if you maybe plan to spend summer months back in merry ole England, you should time your extension application to fall into the months around New Year which you definitely will spend in the sunshine

is your marriage already acknowldeged and registered inside Thailand? The reason I ask is that you need a Thai marriage registry printout from the Amphur for the application to the 1-year extension out of the 90-days stay permit from a Non-O visa, on Immigration

Some immigration offices do accept joint accounts, but the balance must be sufficient for both parties to qualify. In your case, when applying for an extension based on marriage, the account would still need to show 800,000 baht, even though your spouse is Thai, since formally only half of the funds are considered to belong to you.

The bank account needs to be in your name not your wife's as it is your extension

so get your bank account the same time as you're wife's, that might be easier for you

Do not want a NonO until later in the year. Only coming over for 2 weeks. So as long as we have one account to buy the house can then open a bank account when come over for good.
