Re: Tachileik

If crossing over to Tachileik to do a border run and paying the 500B for entry, is it possible to stay there overnight and return to Mae Sai the following day?

And, if so, is one allowed out of TL to explore a little? (ill have my bicycle with me)

Thanks

TLDR : Answer Summary
Yes, it is possible to stay overnight in Tachileik after crossing from Mae Sai for a border run. Passengers are advised to inform immigration if they plan to stay more than a day. While some respondents stated they stayed with their bicycles, exploring beyond Tachileik may require guidance or specific permissions, especially if intending to visit places like Kengtung.

You can stay over. I've gone with my bike and stayed over but never out of Tachikeik. You can go to Kengtung I believe but I think you need a guide for that as Scott says, I did ask about that once but didn't get a clear answer from immigration.

No no problem there at all, only issue is leaving Thailand and coming back you need to leave the bike outside Thai immigration and then go through and get stamped and then explain to the Thai immigration officer why you need to go back in the wrong direction to get your bike. You then go on through the road crossing with your bike. This isn't a problem, it sounds like more of a problem than it is. The whole crossing is very small. Myanmar side it's just these two rooms either side of the road so you just lean your bike on the fence and go in and get stamped, there's no queue or funnel you have to go back against.

yes you can stay there overnight. You have to tell them otherwise you have to leave the same day

I have done that boarder run. My plan was a simple cross, take a look around and take a few pics in like a half hour. When you cross they keep your passport and give you a paper forum to keep with you. I think I recall reading that you could stay up to 4 days but my guess is you might have to ask for that at the boarder. I recall reading that there was one specific city or town that you could travel to but only with a local guide. Please understand that none of this was part of my personal plan so I did not verify how up to date it might be.
