TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion revolves around the complexities of managing finances related to visa applications in Thailand, specifically for expats marrying a Thai national. A key concern is whether the initial deposit of 400,000 THB in a Thai bank account can be withdrawn after obtaining a NON-O marriage visa. The consensus is that while the funds can be accessed after the visa is issued, they must be retained for an extended period to comply with renewal requirements for visa extensions. Users recommend keeping the funds in the account to facilitate future visa processes and adherence to Thai immigration laws.

Yes but if another extension, you’ll need put it back 2 months before. My plan was to keep it there forever but post-covid, Thailand became much more expensive despite the PM did very little to help his people. Take or dip in but if want another Year extension, need put it back.

Yes after the visa is obtained just to be safe

If you're 50+ many people find the retirement visa extension easier to deal with

Mike Dias . . . The 90-day single entry Non-Imm-O "family" visa and how to obtain a one-year extension of your stay permit based on being married to a Thai wife.

There is the "90-day single entry Non-Imm-O Family visa" option, which you can apply by the e-visa online system before you fly to Thailand.

You must provide a financial proof for both the 90-day visa and later at immigration for the application for a "one-year extension of the temporary stay permit based on being married to a Thai wife."

For the application to the initial visa, you either

have at least 400,000 THB (approximately $ 12,000) in a bank account in your sole name. There is no seasoning of the deposit required at this point.

(It is irrelevant for the visa application where the account is located – as long as there is a proof that the account is in your sole name)

However, when applying for the "1-year extension" from out of the 90-days stay permit you got stamped in upon entering Thailand, the 400,000 THB must have been in your Thai bank account for 2 months, and this “seasoning” must be proven with a "bank letter of guarantee" (in Thai: rab roong thanakan).

Or you use the income affidavit of your embassy in Thailand (only if applicable - as many embassies do not issue it any more)

You need to provide evidence of an income/pension of at least 40,000 THB (approximately $ 1200).

For the application to the initial visa, you can use your original marriage documents.

However, for the application to the “1-year extension”, Immigration requires a Thai marriage registry printout - the Kor Ror 22 or 2 (whichever applies) This printout must be current, printed freshly by an Amphoe office. This is possible only if your marriage has already been officially acknowledged in Thailand.

The requirements may vary slightly between every one of the 84 immigration offices in Thailand, so it is recommended to visit them beforehand and ask for the list of requirements for the "extension of the temporary stay permit based on being married to a Thai wife."

What almost all immigration offices have in common is that they will only serve you, if you have been properly registered at your place of residence via a TM30 registration.

Immigration normally will issue the "1-year extension of the stay permit" for four weeks "under consideration." They will ask for photos of the two of you together in front of your house, with the house number visible, a photo of you in the living room, and in the bedroom.

They normally ask for a hand-drawn map of the route from your house to the Immigration office, or the Google Maps coordinates.

Immigration will pay a visit at your home during these four weeks (with prior notice) and will question your neighbours about whether your marriage is "real."

After this visit, you visit Immigration and collect the stamp with your one-year extension of the temporary stay permit. (EOS)

NOTE: keep the 400,000 THB deposit in your bank account at least until you have gathered up the 1-year Marriage Extension stamp. You are free to spend the deposit, however the 400,000 THB need to be back in your account 2 months prior (some Immigrations ask for 3 months) to your next application for the 1-year extended stay permit.

NOTE: Always purchase a re-entry permit for your EOS.

A single re-entry costs 1000 THB, a multiple re-entry will be 3,800 THB.

The re-entry permit keeps your stay permit valid in case you leave the country. If you leave without a re-entry permit, your EOS will become invalid.

PLEASE use the correct terminology:

Technically spoken, there is no "visa extension", and the 1-year extension is not a “marriage visa”. Immigration does not extend any visa. That's technically not possible.

The use of this wording is improper English. You use the “90-days marriage visa” for entering Thailand, the visa becomes invalid. You will get stamped in for a 90-days stay permit. You then apply for a one-year extension of this stay permit. A stay permit is not a visa.

I got married in Thailand on vacation did not need visa , came back to Canada got my wife a visa for Canada and when she here apply for permanent resident visa so she can travel here anytime and I’m in a retirement visa so I cannot ever travel back and forth multiple times , there , now you know , just phone Thai consulate in Vancouver they will help you with online application with E-Visa and give you all your options
Kevin *******
You will need to go to the consulate in Bangkok to get your affidavit signed , you need to make appointment to get in sometimes takes a week sometimes takes 3 months once you have the papers signed you need to apply for marriage licence once you have licence it needs to be sent in for approval once you get aporoval you need to go to the district office in Bangkok to get married once you married if you not living in Bangkok you need to get registered wherever you going to be living , once you registered at that district if your wife change names she will need new passport, you would have signed the paperwork in Bangkok when you got married , take lots of pictures of you and your future wife you will need to show you are serious especially if you want get to come to Canada to visit , you will need minimum 20K in Canadian bank account for her application , if you go there for visa you can apply at the Thai consulate in Vancouver or Ottawa , do not apply for tourist visa you cannot open bank account , you can apply for spousal visa and work permit at the same time you need 400,000 Thai baht in Canadian account 3 months before you apply in Canada for spousal visa , spousal visa only good for one entry if you plan on leaving and going back within the same year you will need reentry permit to go back or they will cancel visa …. Or … apply for retirement visa which has multiple entry visa but you need 800,000 baht in bank 3 months before you apply and you will need health insurance which you can buy online , your choice I just went through all the hops and also my Thai wife she has her temporary visa approved to come here and my visa takes 1 month approval for me to go there , if you have 800,000 Thai baht and medical get the retirement visa multiple entry , spousal visa only one entry so that’s your choice, with spousal you can get a work permit visa so if she has lots of friends to find you job you can work there too which is exactly what I’m going to do, I’m also going to open an automotive repair shop on her land so Technically There is almost no way I cannot ever be tossed out unless I break the rules

You don't mention where you intend to marry.. in Thailand or in Canada before you travel? The process to obtain a married visa is different for each.. so you need to clarify this to get a meaningful response!

George ******

Kevin *******
@George *****
yes before you apply you need bank statements for one year and minimum 20-40k Canadian in your bank in Canada to apply in Canada for visas
George ******
@Kevin ******
I’m sure I read it’s 3 months it has to be in your account prior to applying but I could be mistaken?
Kevin *******
@George *****

George ******

Technically u apply for a 90days nonO marriage visa and after open a bank acct to season 400k for 2mths to apply for the 1yr extensions.......once u get the extensions yes u can use the 400k in order to avoid putting back the 400k for the next year's extensions you should start depositing 40k/mth for the next 12mths to get ready for next extension
Graham ******
@Jesper ******
if the Immigration Office will accept the 40k deposits because many now do not.
David **********
No

No, it's gotta stay in the bank

Registered your marriage??? You not married in Thailand? You should have already registered your marriage at the district office where you live if you were married in Thailand? Did you get married online??

Not married yet, plan to get that done when I go back in a few months, I guess Ill come back home and apply for the non O visa go back and open an account immediately transfer over the 400k baht wait 2 months and then apply for the marriage visa. Is that right? does that make sense?
Kevin *******
@Mike *****
I tried to PM you but you have messenger closed

@Mike *****
if you want visa while in Thailand and you are Canadian they say to get done in Bangkok everything is theee that you will need and have your money and bank statements ready when you open a bank account , good luck
Mikkel *******
@Mike *****
that makes perfect sense. Depending on where in Thailand, you might be able to get the visa without leaving Thailand. Some immigration offices can and will sell you the visa. Others won't or can't. If that's the only reason for going home again, check first at your immigration office. You might save a trip.

Without a non-o visa it will be extremely hard to open a bank acct in your name/phone number

You could put in her bank acct with her name/phone number.

But that could be risky

Good luck

just needs a letter from immigration stating he's obtaining a visa, did it a few months ago after the rule change it was easy

true if he’s going straight for the non-o

No.. for a non-o based on marriage funds don't need to be reflected as an international transfer.

I don’t think they really care it then again T I T

But then again there is no cohesion between offices so if you’re an expert on immigration office F then move to immigration office M you will be starting back at 0 because there is no translation between offices

Better to keep it there as you will have to have it there every year to renew your visa. Its not a lot of money anyway.
