Anybody managed to get a bank account with DTV in Bangkok?

Visiting 10 branches, it sounds like they don't know what it is so got denied.

If you did, please share bank/branch. If you used an agent, please share contact details and fees involved.

TLDR : Answer Summary
Opening a bank account in Bangkok with a DTV visa can be challenging due to banks classifying it as a tourist visa. Some users recommend using agents to facilitate the process, which can cost between 1,000 and 5,000 THB. Common banks for foreigners without work permits are Bangkok Bank and Kasikorn Bank; however, having a more stable visa might increase your chances of approval. Experiences vary, and patience may be needed due to differing rules and bureaucratic processes at various branches.

If you have DTV, I wonder if it would be better to have a Thai citizen along to help you sign up for bank account? Has anyone done that?

Just use an agent, but I would question the need for a bank account in Thailand except for scanning, which can be accomplished using cash. I have two bank accounts, and I stopped sending money to them except once in a while to keep them active. Now I exclusively use US bank-issued CC (multiple advantages like fraud protection, cash back, etc.) whenever possible, or I withdraw cash from ATMs using a US-issued ATM card (ATM fees are refunded). I started doing this after COVID-19 and never felt any need for Thai bank accounts.

I also agree the real need for a Thai bank account does not exist.

Unfortunately there are some shops only accepting Thai credit cards, and paying with QR code can be convenient. Also ATM is more expensive for non Thai users.

But I have a Thai girlfriend with a Thai bankaccount, and transferring money is easy nowadays.

Please name a shop that only accepts Thai credit cards but not foreign bank issued credit cards. Never see it before except I think the electricity app to pay your electric bill. Condo maintenance company works with bank transfer only, so also paying for eater bill for my condo.

DTV is not supposed to get bankaccounts, and if they will open for that, the not until you’ve stayed at least 3 month in Thailand, and got a permanent place to stay.

Reconsider if a Thai bankaccount is need-to-have or nice-to-have.

Banks in Thailand are like everywhere in the world, interested in having good stable custormers, that have a permanent address, a steady easy traceable income, and use the account all year round.

That is why the banks are reluctant to give accounts to people on short time ( read: tourist ) visas, and who only spend part of the year in Thailand.

Don’t expect to get a residence certificat, until you have stayed at a permanent adress in at least 3 month, since that is what the residence certificat should confirm.

Furthermore the added attention on whitewashing of money, is an added burden on the banks, so even depositing large amounts isn’t a guaranteed way to open an account.

The value of a resident certificat, had gone down, since Immigration Officers are giving them to people that are not on a longterm visa, or have stayed severel months at 1 adress in Thailand, so even if it is a formal requirement, the bank make up their own assesment of the stability of the want-to-be customer.

I opened mine here on visa exempt, previously they were very easy going.

Alternatively, contact Siam legal. (They provide a legal reference letter to support)

For a 5,000 THB fee.

*DTV is not yet recognised by banks and it is categorised Tourist visa type.

It'll take some time for it to be accepted, similar to the Elite Visa, which, although also a tourist visa, permits the opening of bank accounts.

I think the Elite Company provides opening bank account services, and it's included in their fees.

The Thai Elite/Privilege Visa membership offers a concierge service that assists and expedites the process of opening bank accounts with either, or both, Bangkok Bank and Kasikorn Bank.

However, the visa itself is classified as a tourist visa, and "officially", tourist visa types do not qualify for opening bank accounts. However, the final decision always depends on the discretion of the bank branch manager.

You will need a agent and even then might not be able to - DTV is considered a tourist visa by the bureaucracy

Fees cost usually 7000 baths. One agent in Chiang Mai told me I can't open it except if i subscribe to a corporal insurance that doesn't cover... foreigners.

So 8k + 7k to open it.

The other solution a bank agent gave me is to buy a condo.

Take a bus to Pattaya in the morning, visit agent, have your bank account by afternoon. I recommend Tik Tok Services, they will pick you up and drop you off. Very good take care.

Visit Pattaya. Several agents there will open a Bangkok Bank account for you on any visa, for 4500-5000.- THB. One of these agents is F.S. Consulting Co. (they got a facebook page and a website with a price list)

Agent will depend on the city you’re in. Fee 1000-5000฿ varies by city and agency. At least it’s a one time fee and then the account is yours for life.

Sometimes you have to keep trying. It’s frustrating. It’s time consuming. Bangkok Bank (dark blue) and Kasikorn (green) are the two best banks for foreigners without a work permit.

You sometimes have to visit multiple branches of the same bank until you find a manager that agrees to attempt to try it. Calls will be made to Bangkok. There will two fingers thick of paperwork to sign. It takes about 1-2 hours to open the account.

Good luck.

Do they have English on the paperwork that you need to sign? I'm thinking of hiring a short-termed interpreter to help with reading through them and make sure I'm not signing myself into some potential problems later.

there’s some English but it’s still a bank account. You’re not signing over your first born child or giving a kidney.

You’ll be alright. If sceptical, probably best to pass. It’s a minor convenience to have but not necessary to live here.

, I might have lowballed the bottom end of the range and can’t provide details to support it.

I do know someone who opened a bank account in June this year on a tourist visa using an agent in Chiang Mai.

He paid 2,000฿ but it wasn’t the only service. He used their services to accomplish multiple tasks and paid close to 11,000฿ for everything he needed.
