TLDR : Answer Summary
If you depart Thailand for Cambodia and return under a visa exemption, you will receive a new visa exemption stamp upon reentry. It's important to check that your flights do not require transit status; otherwise, you'll go through immigration. Although an METV isn't strictly necessary unless you plan multiple entries, be mindful of your entry and exit history when returning.

Note: in order to be "in transit" the arriving flight to Bangkok and the departing flight to Cambodia must be part of the same reservation, must have the same PNR. Not knowing that, I had to do immigration in and out of DMK a few months ago.

not true. Many flights with airlines that have a "codeshare agreement" can remain in transit and get baggage checked through. No need to be on "one ticket" or "one reservation". Can be separate tickets. Must notify check-in staff at the counter

I am speaking from personal experience. The "not true" comment is at least excessive.

your experience, others have had a different experience. And it is easy to check the airline's policies, they can be contacted per email and asked

I never said that you are lying. I said your comment is not true. Not true in its full extent - you don't necessarily need to have both flights on the same PNR. It can be on a separate PNR. It depends on which airlines you use. For example if I arrive at the BKK with Qatar Airways, and fly to Koh Samui 4 hours later with Bangkok Airways, I can fly on separate tickets but my baggage gets checked through and I can stay inside the transit, I then need to enter Thailand through a special Immigration counter on the way from the international to the domestic terminal . . . because these two airlines have a "codeshare agreement"

Shouldn't be a problem since your first stay in Thailand, is a very short time, 1 day. They are looking for people who stay close to 90 days. That is, unless you have a lot of visa exempts and trips to Cambodia in your history.

You can only get an METV visa in your home country or another country where you have legal resident status.

New visa exemption. I would look for a flight where you stay in transit.

Nope, you will get another stamp in your passport for a new visa exemption.

Check on your eVisa website if there's a Transit visa available for you. You would not "waste" one of your free exempt entries.

it will not be wasted under these circumstances unless the OP has a history of Visa Exempt entries and extensions

Yes, you take your baggage and recheck with local airline on separate ticket to Cambodia.

Yes, you go through immigration in BKK both times.

Yes, you can use the visa exemption again upon return to Thailand from Cambodia if eligible and within limits.

No METV is strictly required unless you want multiple entries guaranteed without border entry limits.
