TLDR : Answer Summary
Individuals on a Digital Nomad Visa (DTV) in Thailand cannot actively conduct business or work for a Thai company. While you can incorporate a business and be a shareholder, you cannot participate in its day-to-day operations or obtain a work permit. If you wish to engage in business activities, it is required to switch to a Non-B visa, which is appropriate for work and business engagements.

If you mean by opening a business is being a shareholder of a company then yes you can. You don't even need to be in Thailand to be a shareholder of a company. You may attend business meetings time to time or visit suppliers or trade shows. However, you cannot be part of day to day business operations and definitely cannot work. if your business just sources the product in Thailand and sell them overseas and make the money overseas then it can fall under overseas income. However, if you're selling products or services within Thailand and making money within Thailand then it's different. Basically you can only attend meetings or visit suppliers or trade shows but cannot be more involved directly daily. Best talk to an visa tax agent/lawyer. Cheers

You can open an online business on the DTV selling to the world. Just don’t … you know open a brick and mortar in Thailand.

yes you can. In Jail.

No.. The DTV allows remote work only, working in any capacity for a Thai business is not exempted for work permits and the DTV does not support obtaining a work permit.

To be 100% accurate, you can 'open' a business as in the process of incorporating it, which you can do on any visa class or even a visa exempt. You cannot work in that business in any way.

Look, Thailand isn't really a "mother may I" kind of country. Do your thing, don't draw attention to yourself and generally things will sort themselves out, especially with a little bit of tea money to the right people. Just keep your mouth shut.

Be aware though that if you are doing anything outside the perceived norm you are making yourself a target for extortion, both by locals and unfortunately other expats. That's why you keep your mouth shut about whatever it is you are trying to accomplish and make it legit sooner rather than later.

Haja! You've been watching too many movies. I can't speak for the places you hang out at, but if he does have a big mouth it will most likely end up with having lots of lady boy friends waiting for him at an ATM rather than organized crime lords trying to extort cash.

yea follow this and you shouldn't have any problems running and owning a business is more work then it's worth unless your packing best to invest it in stocks or elswear

You can open a business but can’t work in it on a DTV
Vladimir **********
absolutely not, gotta get Non-B for work/business activities

@Vladimir *********
he said open business, not work in one, to be fair. Which is possible on dtv 🙏

@Dom *******
Operating a business is kinda implied there😅and you can't legally oversee/operate it on DTV as it's considered work.. I'm not trying to discourage anyone, just know your risks beforehand. Otherwise one may end up paying very high "fees" or being booted out (or both actually)

Even planning it and strategists for it is working on the business.

Definitely not gonna open a business with DTV.

doing business inside Thailand... correct ✅

you can as a US citizen under the Amity Treaty.

Though it takes a good chunk of $ and takes forever. Then you still have to employ 2 to 4 thais to get your own work permit to actu work in your business. It's def a subject I've researched alot.

And it takes about a year even woth a lawyer to get approval under rhe Amity Treaty.

There's so much people don't realize they have to do and pay to achieve a legal business in Thailand

I thought that treaty stopped a few years back?
