Hello! I would like to live in Thailand during the coldest months in my country (October to February/March, so like 5-6 months) while still working (I’m a freelance translator) and I was wondering if I could do this with a DTV without much of a hassle. Would it be ok if I go back home and don’t come back for 6 months? Correct me if I’m wrong, but this would mean my 180 days is automatically refreshed when I come back. And I don’t need to file anything when I leave and come back, right?

Also, since it’s a multiple entry visa, I was wondering if, during those 6 months in Thailand, the following scenario is ok (valid and without extra paperwork) :

After 3 months, I go to China, for example, and re-enter after 1 week. My 180 days is refreshed and could spend 6 more months but only stay 3 more. Then I go home and re-re enter after 6 months.

Sorry if my questions seem obvious hahah, I might be overthinking but I’m not used to visas and long-term travel so I want to make sure I understand! Thanks!
Answer summary
The user is inquiring about living in Thailand for 5-6 months with a DTV (Digital Work Visa) while working as a freelance translator. They seek clarity on visa conditions regarding entry and exit, particularly if their 180-day stay can be refreshed by leaving the country and re-entering. Responses indicate that the DTV is suitable for their situation, allowing multiple entries and a maximum stay of 180 days per entry. While leaving and returning resets this period, it's important for the user to understand specific application processes and conditions.

This is what the dtv is literally made for. Its valid for 5 years and you get multiple entries

The DTV could work very well for you indeed. The bigger questions are if you apply as a remote worker or for "soft power" classes. Secondly, do you want to use an agent or apply on your own? Thirdly, do you have a chance to go to a friendly embassy where the visa is probably issued quickly, or somewhere else?

Yes. Your plan works. That is the beauty of the DTV: Enter as many times as you want and stay up to 180 days on each entry.

Nothing is refreshed.

During the 5 years validity of this DTV, you get get a maximum of 180 days stay on each entry.

If you leave the country, your stay gets void, on re-entry a new maximum of 180 days is stamped in the passport.

I have somewhat the same situation and have changed retirement-visa for DTV 2 years ago. It fits perfect for working on distance.

The DTV is a 5 year multi entry Visa that is broken down in 6 month segments

You can come and go as much or as little as you want for the full 5 years

So yes your plan is great for the DTV Visa
