Can I leave Thailand before my re-entry permit expires to apply for a Non-O visa?

Non-O Visa Application

I have an extension of stay, based on OA visa granted in U.K. 2016, and a multiple re-entry permit; both expire 16/01/2020.

It is my intention to leave and re-enter Thailand to obtain 30 day visa exempt and then go to the Chiang Mai immigration office and apply for a 90 day Non-O visa (based on having the required funds in a Thai bank in my name).

Am I correct in thinking that I must wait until 16/01/2020 to leave Thailand? otherwise immigration will stamp me back into Thailand using my re-entry permit

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is inquiring about the timing of leaving Thailand to apply for a Non-O visa while holding a valid re-entry permit that expires on 16/01/2020. They are unsure if they must wait until that date to leave Thailand or if they can leave earlier and then re-enter on a visa exemption. Comments suggest that as long as the re-entry permit is valid, they should be able to leave and return, but caution is advised regarding potential cancellation of the re-entry permit.

I have seen someone go to the immigration office and actually get their re-entry permit canceled :O BUT I think it was a one off.

Believe me the Chiang Mai immigration office will know what you're trying to do. Why not go ask if they can cancel the re-entry permit so you can bounce earlier?
