I'll enter thailand on 20 January 2023 on Australian passport and 45 days visa exempt. If I apply for non o based on retirement in bangkok can I leave the country while this is in progress. I already have a bank account in thailand.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user plans to enter Thailand on a 45-day visa exemption and is inquiring about applying for a Non-O visa based on retirement. Comments clarify that while the Non-O visa application is under review, leaving Thailand is not allowed. Once the application is approved and the visa is stamped, the user can leave the country, but must purchase a re-entry permit to maintain their status.

you have a totally workable plan comin' in, applying for the 90 day Non-O, getting it, getting a re-entry and then returning before that 90 day stamp is up to apply for the year extension AND it seems to fit your time line for travel as well

Good luck with it (y) ๐Ÿ™‚

You can apply for the 90-day non-o from Sydney Consulate, which gives you more breathing space once you arrive in Thailand.

could do. My timings are arrive thailand 20 Jan. Leave again 30 march to Oz then back in on 8 may. I thought I could apply say 2nd week in March and apply for extension once I'm back in may. OR forget that and start process on return in may. No insurance from thai coy needed

For non-o from Sydney Consulate you need only 90-day

insurance. Cheap as chips.

also non o from Sydney in January means my 90 days would be up when I'm out of the country so I don't see how that would work.

during the initial 90 day Non-O visa application review process you CANNOT leave the country at all. That review process takes between 14 and 20 days depending on the office you use.

Once you get the 90 day stamp and new Non-O visa inked in you can leave IF you buy a re-entry permit (which is only valid for that 90 day stamp) and of course you must be back before your 90 day stamp runs out so you can apply for the year extension
