My wife and I came here in March on a 90-day visa, which is obviously good thru 7/31. I need to have dental work (implants) and am hoping I can get dentist to write me a note that will allow me to stay in Thailand during the 3-month recovery period. Dentist has said they will provide the documentation. Anyone have experience with this?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is seeking advice on obtaining a visa extension in Thailand due to upcoming dental work requiring a recovery period. Responses indicate that medical extensions can be obtained with proper documentation from the dentist, though the process may not be straightforward for outpatient dental procedures. It's suggested to apply to immigration before the current visa expires and to consider using an agent for assistance. Some comments also highlight the challenges of gaining extensions for dental work, with a possible need for being considered an inpatient.

In the case of dental surgery involving removal, cleaning then 1-3 months for any infection to fully heal. If any bone loss then bone implant and another 3 + months for bone

Yep, it's a medical Visa catered to medical tourists. If they say they can help you then that's great news.

I would consider using an agent. It's not clear that outpatient dental work really qualifies for this extension, but a agent may know how to present it in such a way you get it. I have heard some immigration offices really want you to be an inpatient stuck in a hospital bed to get it and will reject even people in a pretty bad condition as long as they are out of hospital.

Dental work, isn't really "can't travel" which is what the extension is for. You COULD go home after the work, realistically. You can get it by yourself, but you may need to be in a worse state than just getting dental work.

Medical extensions of stays are NOT easily issued. You would need to get the documentation from the dr, the dental clinic etc and go to the immigration office BEFORE your current entry stamp expires and apply for the extension based on medical reasons.

They can be issued for up to longer than 90 days at a time. SO make sure the doctor writes on the request that you can't travel for 90 days OR you're not gonna get the full 90 at once.

Thanks, I’m going for my first consultation middle of July and they’ve indicated they can provide documentation for me to take to immigration. Hopefully, 2 weeks prior to visa expiration will be enough lead time.

totally will work and it will either get approved or denied based on the documentation and the way they write it.

In Bangkok the medical extensions are issued in Section A out at Chaengwattana Immigration office (the room where they do 90 day reporting)

Good Luck, take care, stay safe (y)

People have been known to get medical extensions yes. In fact some places like Bumrungrad do it all for you ie go to immigration and have it all sorted. Medical tourism is important to Thailand and a priority. I was quoted 60k baht per tooth for 4 last week so they are making good money from it 😉

The ideal waiting time is 6 months between extraction and implant. Then another 6 months between implant and crown. With front teeth, they can often skip the wait between extraction and implant.

I'm on my 5th implant now (2 in Thailand).

If it's an upper molar, you may need a "sinus lift" which needs 8 months between implant and crown. That is what I am waiting on now.
