Is it currently possible to come in and get a tourist visa on landing in Thailand ? And then extend the visa here in Thailand when it expires - my son needs to come here for about 4 months. Flying in from France. Australian/ British passports.

TLDR : Answer Summary
Currently, you cannot get a tourist visa on landing in Thailand. Instead, you should obtain a tourist visa from a Thai consulate before traveling. However, as an alternative, your son can enter Thailand visa-exempt if he holds an Australian or British passport, which allows for a 45-day stay without a visa. If he needs to stay for about four months, he can extend his stay while in Thailand.

Use the Aussie passport to enter and leave Thailand.

If he uses the UK passport it's possible that the hotel will not allow him to be out of the room at any time during his quarantine.

With the Aussie passport he should be allowed to be out of the room one hour daily the day after the first negative COVID test result. No swimming allowed no use of indoor fitness room.

hope his visit is a happy one...

But please get it in writing from insurer re they will pay for COVID hospital expenses if you test positive for COVID without symptoms.

That is what I worry about.

NOPE, you buy a tourist visa from a thai consulate before you wing your way here

BUT

What is possible is that he come here on what's known as a visa exempt entry <- he doesn't buy a visa before he comes here and because of his nationality he's stamped in for free for 45 days

hi there, you mentioned 45 days for a visa exempt entry, is that a new rule? Is it also 45 days for Belgian citizens? Thank you.
Ellie *******
@Natacha ********
30days visa-exempt entry gets 45days right now as a temporary measure alternate to quarantine. As long as your nationality is eligible to 30days visa-exempt scheme, you will get 45days upon entry.

Soon your son will be flying to join you in Thailand
Tod *********
either the aussie or the brit passport will let him in visa exempt.

Remember though he's still gonna have to get 100K USD in covid insurance, have a negative covid test within 72 hours of flying in, book the required days in quarantine and request a Certificate Of Entry from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Office.

yes he already has the correct insurance, and can do the other stuff. Heโ€™s even had COViD ๐Ÿ˜†

if he has had COVID before please be aware that the Thai laboratories are sensitive in reading the COVID tests.

We are seeing many reports of COVID positive in ASQ quarantine without symptoms... Especially from those who have had COVID before. Thai labs are picking up traces of COVID when tested positive.

Make absolutely sure that he has insurance which will pay for COVID hospital expenses if you test positive for COVID without symptoms.

In Thailand all who test positive for COVID with or without symptoms in ASQ are placed in mandatory hospital quarantine.

Best to buy from a Thai insurance company and Thai agent... Good luck

thank you. We have global insurance that was accepted when my husband did the whole quarantine COE thing here last year so think thatโ€™s covered. Yes - letโ€™s hope it doesnโ€™t show up in Thailand tests. He had two tests to go in and out of the U.K. at Christmas. Both negative so fingers crossed. He got COViD in August/Sept last year just after arriving at uni in France

again...

Please ask your insurer if they will pay for COVID hospital expenses if your son tests positive for COVID without symptoms. Costs ranging from 100,000 - 150,000 Thai baht.

ok thanks I will def double check

@Tod ********
is that 100k USD just in "covid insurance" or general medical insurance that includes covid cover ?
Gregor **********
@Phil **********
if your insurance document clearly states that it also covers Covid19 treatment up to 100,000 US $ or "unlimited", in English, it should be accepted
James ********
@Gregor *********
the problem ....there are insurers which will not cover hospital costs if you test positive for COVID without symptoms. They deny payment of the claim based on the hospitalization not being MEDICALLY NECESSARY.

ok ๐Ÿ‘Œ yep thatโ€™s the one I was thinking about. Can he extend that once here ?
Tod *********
@Tamsin ******
he can extend a visa exempt entry at the immigration office ONCE for 30 days for 1900baht, so he'd get 75 days in total
