My non immigrant O visa will expire in June. If I leave the country before that time can I get a one year extension on that visa or do I need to do the full application again?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion revolves around the expiration of a Non-Immigrant O visa and the possibility of obtaining a one-year extension. It is clarified that extensions must be done while in the country, and a new application would be needed if the individual leaves Thailand before the visa expires. Advice is given regarding the need for a new passport and compliance with financial documentation to secure the extension.

you didn't get a yearly extension in singapore :O

The thai consulates in other countries sell VISAS not extensions.

Thai immigration offices inside the country sell extensions.

Let's hash out what it is you're actually you're on here

Are you on a yearly extension of stay that you got from the immigration office by meeting the proof of funds, turning in a pile of documentation and that has a stamp like this in your passport?

Tod Daniels do you know how many days it takes in Vietnam?

@St***
You could go to Savannakhet Lao or Ho Chi Minh City Vietnam and get a new year-long, multi-entry Non-O visa if you wanted to.

Neither of those consulates require proof of funds to issue that visa and only minimal documentation.. It's 5000baht for the visa in Savannakhet and 200USD for it in HCMC

I think I get it now. If I still had the money in the bank I could have applied for the one year extension from my local immigration office.

Yea I’m on the year long multi entry non O visa.

OR are you on a year-long, multi-entry Non-O visa (from a thai consulate in another country) where you exit/re-enter the country every 90 days?
Tod *********
In order to get a new yearly extension you would need to get a new passport (seeing as you said your current one expires) AND then apply for the yearly extension by meeting the financial requirements and providing the documentation like you did last time.

where did you get your last extension? You apply for a yearly extension at the immigration office that serves the area where you live.

I'd stop by the immigration office that you're going to use (with your thai wife) and get the hand out that lists the photos, documents, copies, bank letters, etc that you need for the extension.

ok and where do I apply for this new yearly extention? And do I need all the funds in my account for three months or what ever it is?

@Steve ****************
, right, extensions of stay are issued for a year at a time (unless your passport expires before that year; as you found out). Every year you apply for a totally NEW yearly extension of stay.

Most offices let you apply for a new yearly extension when you have 30 days or less left on your current one.

Oh ok basically reapply.

And some dates. You leave before your visa get expired? Question is than when do you get back, is this before the valid until date on your multiple entry visa or do you plan to use a re-entry permit to keep your current stay alive by coming back before your admitted to stay date or do you plan to come back to Thailand after these dates?

@St***
the financial requirements for a yearly extension of stay based on marriage to a thai is 400K baht in a thai bank account in your name only for 2 months before you apply for your extension.

Once you apply for the extension it will go 'under consideration' for 30 days, then you go back and get the extension inked into your passport.

Some immigration offices want you to keep the 400K baht in the account for that 30 day under consideration period too. Check with your immigration office to see how they do it

@St***
unfortunately, there is no Non-O visa offered for being with a thai family :( You can have it based on marriage to a thai or raising half thai children..

@Steve ****************
what are you getting a new Non-O visa/extension for? What's the reason?
Steve *****************
ORIGINAL POSTER
I plan to come back before my visa expires if I can apply for a one year extension. I need to leave by the second because my existing passport expires then. That’s why I got an extension to stay until the second. Basically I want to get another one year non Immigrant O visa and want to know can I do this in Thailand or do I need to do it in say Singapore reply etc.

It would help if you confirm if you have a Non-O or a Non-OA or an extension of stay. Without knowing that, it is impossible to give you the correct advice.
Dominic *****
Extensions are done in-country. When do you plan to return to Thailand?

@Steve ****************
Why do you need to leave before 2nd May? Is that your current Admitted to Stay date?

ORIGINAL POSTER
I need to leave before the 2nd May with a new passport then come back in.
