Hi,

Me and my family are coming to Thailand in summer for 36 days we booked the trip before the 60 day tourist visa rule changed (is changing) back to 30. During our stay can we fly to Singapore or Vietnam for 2/3 days to renew our tourist visa on return, so we don’t go over the 30 day? If not what are the other options?

Thanks in advance ☺️
Answer summary
The user wants to know if they can travel to Singapore or Vietnam for a few days to renew their tourist visa while in Thailand for 36 days, given the recent change from a 60-day to a 30-day tourist visa rule. Community members clarify that the visa exemption program is changing to 30 days, but the tourist visa remains at 60 days. Alternatives discussed include applying for a tourist visa (SETV) before traveling or extending the current visa upon arrival in Thailand, with the extension costing 1900 baht. It is advised not to rely solely on border runs due to potential complications.

You may want to check with your carrier if you intend going visa exempt and your return flight in over the 30 days

Are you confusing " visa exempt" with an actual visa?? Exempt is likely to change in the near future, but you can always buy an extension from Immigration.

The change is still pending, nothing is in stone yet.

Ugh so much confusion, only the visa exempt program is set to change and that has not been implemented yet. It has absolutely no affect on any of the various visas. Visas are not changing.

The 30 day visa exempt can be extended for 30 more days with a 1900 baht fee at a local immigration office. You have more than enought time, why not apply for an SETV (Single Entry Tourist Visa) it will allow an initial 60 days, that way you do not have to worry about extensions. You can go to the e-visa website. Easy peasy.

Everyone is still getting 60 days Visa Exempt as of now..make sure you have proof of onward travel, Proof of at least the first weeks accommodation and 20,000 Baht or equivalent currency in Cash..The first two of these stipulations you will probably need before the airline you are travelling with even let you board..

Just do a 30 day extension in country for THB 1900 each

Visa exemption is changing back to 30 days, not tourist visa, still 60 days .

So get yourself a tourist visa and you are fine

You can just go to the nearest thai immivration office and extend for 30 days, but as of now its still 60 days, you need a TM 30 from your hotel or condo where you are staying along with your passports and 1900 baht for the 30 day visa extension.

Colin Crane The Extension isn’t the problem, to get on the flight in the first place without a onward ticket within 30 days, that’s the problem they facing.

So the only and the safest solution is a tourist visa

Peter Forsgren good point if you don't meet requirements can't board the plane. Get a visa seems the best option.

Apply for an visa exemption extension at any Thailand immigration office..

Probably cheaper than flying in an out of Thailand unless you are keen to experience another country..

Just be well aware of the visa entry rules of any neighboring country you choose..

BazaarAsia57 You can do a day trip from Ranong in Thailand, to Kawthaung in Myanmar without needing a visa for Myanmar. It’s a cheaper option than flying to another country if you are in that area.

Mary Platt I have read that its not advisable to do that border run without the assistance of a visa run agency?

If you need to pay a visa run agency and basically waste a day in transit there and back then the 1900 Baht Extension cost will be cheaper and easier..

Everybody is talking like extending is just to go pay some money and they will give you 30 more days, that’s not correct it’s a lot of paperwork and hassle. And you are applying, that means it can be denied. Don’t take it for granted.

Get a visa if you want to be safe or you can probably extend without any issue. Border bounce would be the least sure way to do it without knowing your visit history.

You can apply for a 30 day extension on your visa exempt from a local immigration office in Thailand. It will cost 1900 baht.

Shane Kinneally but when they arrive they will have a return past the 30 day limit. they have to get allowed into thailand first.

Larry Wheeler I'm in the same situation, booked a 40 day holiday in Krabi with a return flight home at the end. I'm going the safe option & getting a 60 day tourist visa, very affordable & convenient.

Shane Kinneally Not if you don’t have a return or onward ticket within 30 days, and would like to enter Thailand on a Visa exemption

Lisa Callard funny enough but the visa exempt is a safe option as well if you are a tourist

That is the usual way to do it. In February we prolonged our 60 days with another 60, by spending 6 days in Kaula Lumpur. But lately Thai authorities are destroying their market, by trying to scare visitors with this or that. So, actually you never know 🤷 Most people want to avoid the hassle with a visa. Consider staying longer in Malaysia? They give 90 days visa free. And the country is much cheaper...

Simon Adams Of course I have. And something I'll reluctantly do if I must (for India, for example). But for a "normal" winter vacation, I will definitely prefer places that don't complicate things for me. A lot of people found Thailand in that category for the last two years. Now they once again make it complicated to stay more than 30 days, so many snowbirds move on to other destinations. At least according to the frequent discussions I see and hear amongst other seniors. Plenty of choice, so no real problem.

Maybe, some of us also hope that the Thai authorities will start to understand a few things. They are spoiled. In their world, the whole world is standing on our knees begging "please, please let us come. We'll do anything you ask...". There is a large group of Thailand lovers. They will do "anything". There is a large group with relatives, family, girl friends. They'll also do "anything". But a very large group could just as well choose Vietnam, Malaysia, Philippines, Bali, Sri Lanka, Maldives etc etc. Depending on a lot of things - entry rules being one of the major.

But let's just sit back, enjoy a beer somewhere in the world and let the future see who is right.

Lars-Göran Ingvarsson they are not trying to scare visitors, which country would not want to bring money to their economy. The visa rules have been abused for years, they are now bringing it into line. There are lots of other countries you can visit if you dont like the rules.

Bill Harden Yes, that's what we're discussing here. Noone forces us to go to Thailand, as the authorities will soon realise. And change again. But their problem...

Lars-Göran Ingvarsson The visa exempt program has been changed from 60 days to 30 days, albeit until registered in the Royal Gazette will not become law ( after 15 days)

You can apply for a 60-day tourist visa from your Thai embassy online

You can also apply for a 30-day tourism extension from your local immigration office once you are in Thailand, though the tourist visa is a much better option.
