Can I extend my visa in Chiang Mai without a TM30 form?

Question, mostly about TM30 and visa extension:

I entered Thailand via the Phuket Sandbox in August. My 45-day visa exemption expires on Sep 28th. I want to extend it. But I am now in Chiang Mai, and my Airbnb host here in CM has not filed any TM30 form for me here. (He said he "can't.")

My question: Will I be able to get a visa extension here in Chiang Mai without a TM30? Will I just have to pay an 800-baht fee for not having a TM30 on file here? (I'm ok with that.) Or do I need to file my own TM30 before I can possibly extend? Or should I stay a night at a hotel in CM that will file a TM30 for me? Or do I need to fly back to Phuket and extend there??

Also: I was planning to ask for the 30-day extension based on tourism... But I'd like to stay as long as possible, so would it be smarter just to go for the 60-day COVID extension instead?

Thank you so much!

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is seeking advice on extending their visa in Chiang Mai, specifically regarding the TM30 form, which their Airbnb host has not filed. There are mixed comments about whether a TM30 is required for the extension, with one user stating they were not asked for it during their extension in Phuket, while another noted strict enforcement in Chiang Mai requiring the TM30 for the 30-day extension. Additionally, the user is considering whether to apply for a 30-day extension or a 60-day COVID extension.

I did this in CM 3 weeks ago and my wife had to join me via taxi because they told her she (I) had to pay a fine of 1,600 baht. You need to have the TM30 slip or a copy of it in your passport to get the 30 day extension. If you don’t have that they will send you to a building behind the main office to get one. CM seems to have relatively strict enforcement of the rules. You can’t skip the 30 days and go straight to the 60 as far as I know.

Also, do you know if they have copiers there for making copies of my passport pages and TM.6? Or should I make sure to have those ready in advance?

Right - makes sense. Immigration is closed on Friday for a public holiday.

Oh, also, your host can and should register guests.

Thanks for the info. I've heard that many Airbnb hosts are running their rentals illegally, and that is why they will not file the TM30. I'm not going to try to argue with him about it. I'd rather just leave him a negative review and find another hotel that will file one—I was going to check out in a couple of days anyway.

I paid 1,600 B fine for not having TM30 and 1,900 B for 30 day extension. They give you a slip to show you have TM30. Copies can be made right next door.

Thank you for the info. So you did get the extension, but it was a 1,600 baht fee and you had to fill out your own TM30 while you were there?

So the rules say you do NOT need proof of a tm30 to extend a tourist visa or visa exempt entry (though someone still needs to have submitted it for you). I just did an extension a couple weeks ago in Phuket and they didn't ask for it. Also, in the past 4 years (before covid) I've never been asked for one before. Not sure if chiang mai asks for it or not.

Rules also say you need to not have other visa/extension options avaliable for the 60 day covid extension, so you'd need to do the 30 day one first. However, I saw a couple people last week in Phuket get the 60 day covid extension even without getting a 30 day one first, so again, not sure what chiang mai will do but it can't hurt to ask.
