Do I need the TM30 for a 30-day extension in Chiang Mai?

ORIGINAL POSTER
For Sarah Chang who asked about TM30 and extension of stay at Chiang May, here is the instruction panel at the entrance of immigration: the TM30 seem to be mandatory now. I got my TM30 myself very easily with the proper document filed by the condo manager, but you have to get them from him/her before

TLDR : Answer Summary
The TM30 form appears to be a common requirement for transactions at Chiang Mai Immigration, including the extension of stay; however, there is debate among expats about its necessity specifically for 30-day extensions tied to tourist or visa-exempt entries. While some individuals report being asked for TM30 confirmation during extensions or 90-day reporting, others have successfully obtained extensions without providing the TM30 receipt, indicating a lack of consistency in enforcement. It's advised to seek confirmation from your accommodation (like condos or hotels) if they have completed the TM30 filing online to avoid complications.

So we can close now as reports are made, the TM30 registration is still not asked for at application of Extension of Stay for Visa Exempt Entry or Tourist Visa.

Hi all. Good information. I am a bit still confused and hoping you can provide some clarification.

I am on USA passport and came in on exemption. First stay was hotel, then Airbnbs.

Plan on going to get 30 day extension. I am in Buriram now and will be in Chiang Mai as well, both before our original 30 days is up. I haven't been given any paper documents (TM30) for any of them. Do I need to get them?

Anyone know if Buriram will be easier than Chiang Mai?

Or do I not need the physical TM30 at all at either location.

Thanks again for your help.

If they take your passport they probably do it. If you want to cover yourself, ask them for a screenshot of the online TM30. You won't use this for anything, it will just confirm for your peace of mind that it was done.

The most easiest option to find out if the hotel or guesthouse did it on-line is just walk to the front desk and ask the question: Did you report my address on-line, can I please have a print screen as proof, I need this to show Immigration.

ok. How do I know if the hotel or guesthouse does it online? That's my main concern. Going to get renewal, then they actually check and find out it wasn't performed on their end.

You definitely do not need the physical TM30 receipt for a visa exempt extension in Chiang Mai. They say it should have been done, whether they check is unknown. But certainly you do not need the receipt so if a hotel or guesthouse does it online that will definitely be OK.

This means that policy is the TM30 should have been done. Whether they actually check is an open question. You still do not need the receipt for a tourist extension. For non immigrant you may need the actual physical TM30 receipt, I had to get that before in advance of a non immigrant extension (as my condo does it online).

Hmm makes me think maybe I need a TM30 too. I have a 30 day visa exempt entry & was planning to go to immigration & get a 30 day extension when it's getting close to expiring. I will only need an extra 2 weeks as planning to travel south & exit through Malaysia. I've previously stayed in a guesthouse when visiting on a visa exempt & left within the 30 days, but this time rented a condo for a month. So do you think I should seek a TM30 from the condo owner?

Well as you can read, the sign on the door says you need, some people said it was not needed, so we are waiting on reports or members if it is needed or not.

Maybe you could tell where, in which Immigration Office you like to apply for this Extension of Stay?

I’ll update on this once we get request the extension, whether the TM30 was required. Luckily, the suggesting to the host to seek help from the condo manager did the trick. 😀

Not new - a TM30 has been required to be on file for ANY transaction (extension, 90-day report etc) with Chiang Mai Immigration for at least 18 months, possibly longer. Hence the 1,600 baht fines for those who don't have one filed (they get caught when they go to do something else).

Despite being able to look it up on a computer they have a particular thing about wanting the confirmation slip in the back of your passport as well. It's the first thing they look for.

They absolutely do NOT need the receipt for a tourist extension. For other visas yes, but not tourist ones. Whether they check it on the back end is an open question, I suspect they don't routinely but there is always the possibility. Official policy is that it is needed, but note it says nothing about the receipt in reference to the documents. I have never provided it and never been asked for it but my condo does do it online, so it would have been done.

Tourist visa yes - I've had one where I was asked back in 2017. Now I think about it 18 months is short, could even be over two years now - was it mid 2016 or 2017 they started to ask for it? I don't remember. Visa exempt no idea - I haven't had one in years.

Again - general rule is that if you transact with Chiang Mai Immigration they want a TM30 on file. The dozens upon dozens of reports of people being fined didn't come from no where.

unfortunately yes. The student at the front said for my 90 day report I needed to have a TM.30 photocopy, I said go away. We checked with staff inside and they said no need.

I think that is NOT correct, Are you sure that tourist visa extensions and 30 day visa exempt extensions were needing a TM.30 receipt?

By that I mean are YOU here on a 30 day visa exempt or tourist visa entry and have you gotten a 30 day extension on one up there.

:O WOW, I did not know that

BUT I also know that signage doesn't mean that's really what they do. Lemme see if I can find the post where people were saying they didn't need it for a tourist visa or 30 day visa exempt extension.

Sorry
