TLDR : Answer Summary
The ability to extend a tourist visa immediately upon arrival in Thailand depends on the immigration office. While some offices allow extensions right after arrival, others may require that you file a TM30 form first. Generally, it is best to approach the extension request within the last week of your original visa or entry. If you're considering extending a visa exemption, most offices typically allow extensions at any time, but some have stricter rules. Alternatively, you may opt to pay a fine for overstaying, but there is a risk involved regarding future visits.

Never heard of anyone being banned for 3 day overstay. Just pay 1500 bht. There’s no reason to make a drama over this.

I'm just showing what the law is. If arrested on overstay you will end up in a deportation centre and blacklisted. No drama, just law.

I heard that there is always a risk for your next visit if you pay a fine (same for other countries too) so respectfully I want to extend my visa and come back to my favorite country 😀

Alot of good useful comments, thank you. Hoping you can answer our question. We are entering Betong border on 25 Apr with our motorbike. British passport and Malaysian passport. We would ideally like to stay about 6 weeks. Will we be able to book an appointment at Betong Immigration Office on our arrival to make an extension to the tourist exempt visa of 30 days.

Most immigrations allows you to do an extension on a visa exemption at any time. There are some known strict ones who only accept extensions within the last week. Some will also ask for a receipt on your TM.30 (current address) registration.

You probably cannot extend immediately (i.e. straight from the airport) as most Immigration Offices require a TM30 to be filed

Do you mean getting a 60 day visa instead of 30 days visa exempt ?

Depends on the immigration office you are going to use. Some will allow immediately. 3 will make you wait until the last week.

Not sure if you left yet, but a 60 day tourist visa is cheaper than a 30 day extension....

OK in Bangkok you can extend straight away. For a visa exempt entry you’d use the immigration office at IT Square, Laksi Plaza. 3rd floor. Counter K.
