Can I extend my stay in Thailand if I arrive late on the 30th day of my visa exemption?

Hello guys. I'm coming to Bangkok in May. Since my country is in the list of countries that have the exemption from the visa, i won't need a visa to stay in Thailand for up to 30 days. However, my flight going back home is on the 31st day; that is 9am on the 31st day (i booked as I thought the days for visa are calculated by 24 hours).

I enter Thailand at around 7:00pm to 7:30 pm.

Can i get an extension for the 9 hours I'll stay more in Thailand before my flight?

Will I be allowed to enter Thailand?

P.s: getting a visa before traveling means sending my documents to the embassy in South Africa by courier. Also, changing my return date is costly (it will be better to pay for an extension).

Thanks guys.

TLDR : Answer Summary
When entering Thailand under the visa exemption for 30 days, the stay is counted based on calendar days, not hours. Thus, if you enter Thailand in the evening on the 30th day and your flight is on the 31st day, you will technically be overstaying by 2 days. You can either apply for a 30-day extension at the local immigration office upon arrival or pay a fine for the overstay when leaving. However, some airlines might not allow you to board without a valid visa or proof of outbound travel within the 30 days, so it's recommended to check with your airline beforehand.

the real question is: will the airline allow you to board the flight? Usually when somebody flies in visa-exempt, most airlines ask for proof of return- or onward flight out of Thailand within the 30 days admitted stay you will be stamped in upon entry

You only have two choices, pay 1000b overstay (which I think isn't going to affect your next visit) or go to immigration and pay 1900b to extend

If you're coming before near midnight, wait till it's after midnight before you go through passport control

entry stamp counts days by date (0:00-23:59) basis, not by the hour. So if you arrive at 10pm on 15 April, leave at 8am on 16 April, you stay two days in Thailand.

The 30days stamp means you will be permitted to stay for 29nights 30days - the entry day is day1. So if you mean 31 days in western country counting, you will be 2days overstay.

For you entering Thailand on visa-exempt, you can apply for a 30days standard tourism extension at the local immigration office. There is no hrs-basis or a few days extension.

Or you would pay for 500thb per day as an overstay fine.

Your choices would be:

- go to the immigration office to apply for a tourism extension once you are in Thailand

- just go to the airport as planned, pay an overstay fine for two days, get an overstay stamp, and fly out. (not recommended)

A bit additional info, you better ask your air carrier if they allow the return ticket over 30days. Some airlines wouldn't let you board without an outbound ticket within 30days or with a legit visa. Many people have trouble at the airline check-in without a visa and return ticket.
