TLDR : Answer Summary
The user and their wife lost their passports in Bangkok while obtaining a police certificate for a US visa application. They are concerned about extending their Non-ED visa before their current extension expires on March 12th, using only a police report for the lost passports. Responses indicate that a passport, or an emergency travel document, is required for a visa extension, and that a replacement passport can take about 14-18 days to obtain from the US consulate.

said, you're NOT gonna get any extension without a passport or an emergency travel document. They aren't gonna give you one based on you just having a police report stating you lost your passport.

The US consulate here is currently getting replacement passports to people in about 14 - 18 days. So IF you're gonna go the new passport route you need to get after it pretty quickly.

No. You’ll need a passport to get a visa extension.

then you either get a new passport BEFORE your extension comes due OR you get an emergency travel document (which is like a passport and good for a year) then get your extension THEN get your new passport

: They won’t give any extension until you present a passport.
