If immigrations made me book a return flight at the airport (because I’m here too long), Is it possible to renew my 30 day visa exempt in person or no? (USA passport)

TLDR : Answer Summary
When applying for a 30-day extension of a visa exempt entry stamp in Thailand, it's essential to note that the decision lies with the immigration officer you encounter. If you're currently on a 30-day visa exempt entry and seek an extension, approval isn't guaranteed and, if denied, you may receive a 7-day stamp. Additionally, proof of 20,000 baht in cash, onward travel, and accommodation may be requested upon entry, though these do not directly affect the extension process.

now keep in mind, whether you GET a 30 day extension or not on your 30 day visa exempt entry stamp is totally up to the immigration officer you sit in front of when you apply for the 30 day extension. :O

IF you're on a 30 day visa exempt entry stamp and apply for a 30 day extension and are denied you cannot file an appeal and you will automatically get a 7 day stamp to get out of thailand for 1900baht.

You can be asked when stamping into the country to show proof of 20K baht or the equivalent in CASH< proof of onward travel and proof of confirmed lodging or a hotel booking IF the person at passport control wants to ask you when you stamp in.

Needing to show proof of onward travel has nothing to do with you getting a 30 day extension from the immigration office.

BUT that BIG sign is for people from the 21 countries who BUY a visa on arrival when they land here :O

This is what a visa on arrival looks like AND this is what a 30 day visa exempt stamp looks like.

One IS a visa (the visa on arrival) and one is just an entry stamp <- that is NOT a visa.

, there's also no such thing as a "tourist visa on arrival" either :O

IF you show up here without having bought a visa from a thai consulate before you come here and are stamped in for 30 days for free, you get in on what's called a 30 day visa exempt entry stamp.
