Can I apply for a visa at a different consulate than my passport country while in another country?

When applying for an e-visa, do you have to choose the consulate of the country where your passport belongs? For example, if I have a British passport, can I apply for a Malaysian consulate for visa processing?

TLDR : Answer Summary
When applying for an e-visa, you typically need to use the online system of the country you are currently in, rather than applying physically at a consulate. You can apply for an e-visa online while in that country, such as Malaysia, regardless of your passport nationality. Applying from Thailand is restricted for certain visa types, so it's important to consider where you are applying from.

This might be a stupid question but: What if I am traveling and not staying long there? Say I apply for the e-visa from Malaysia and then I fly to India. While in India I receive my DTV from Malaysia online. Can I then fly India to Thailand?

Avoid problems and wait for the visa to be aproved, before going any where else.

thank you 😃 That is indeed my plan, but I am not sure what their processing times are and if it takes ages I will have to leave - I have work commitments and can’t stay there for weeks on end😞 planning for worst case scenario. Any idea of KL embassy processing times? I’ve checked their website but can’t find info 😞

Everything is going to change with the move towards e-visa, and it is so new that no experiences has been made yet.

A guess will be that the average visa processing time would be 10 - 15 working days, like it is in other places that have been using e-visa for a long time.

May also see a move towards prioritization of traveldate, rather than time of application.

"For example, if I have a British passport, can I apply for a Malaysian consulate " This was the question. From this week, you can apply in Malaysia the e-visa online, if you are British. Until last week wasnt enable to apply online in Malaysia, this is new option.

Sandor Gruber you can apply for the Thai Visa using the Evisa online application system, when you are in the Country where the Thai Embassy or Consulate is located. Malaysia as you noted.

Suggest you look at what appears to be still a walk-in Thai Embassy in Taipei.

Why do you feel relevant Taipei ?

The poster asked Malaysia. I answered Malaysia.

But so easy, anyone can check in the official website, is it possible or not.

Sandor Gruber your suggestion is okay. I have read that Taipei is fine too, with the same or next day decisions. And Taipei will NOT collect the payment for the visa if not issued.

I wish them success wherever they decide to go.

The real question my Anonymous Participant is

WHERE are you now?

and

Where will you be when you go to apply for the visa?
Stephan ***********
You have to apply in the country where you are at that moment.

You apply for the e-visa in the country that you are applying from. Malaysia has switched to the e-visa system so if you are there you can apply online.

You need to chose what's the country of your passport, and what's the place where you're located. As for applying at a country that isn't one's own, most embassies/consulates take applications from anybody (including tourists), while some others accept only local natives or foreigners with legal residence in that country.
