Can I apply for a Thai e-visa from Malaysia using my European permanent residency?

I did a quick search but couldn't find an answer to my specific question. Regarding the Thai e-visa: I'd like to travel from Malaysia to Thailand and the easiest option would be to apply for a Thai tourist visa online. In the section "eligibility for application" it asks for your permanent residence/current location -- which are two quite different things. Entering my European nationality and my European permanent residency and I'm eligible to apply. But if I enter my current location of Malaysia, I would not be eligible. Also, the flight ticket required for the application would show my current location. Has anyone any advice here? Can I apply by choosing my country of permanent residency but with a flight departing from Malaysia? Thanks!

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is seeking clarification on applying for a Thai e-visa while currently located in Malaysia, but holding permanent residency in a European country. They are confused about the eligibility requirements that ask for both current location and permanent residence. Comments from the community explain that the e-visa process requires applying where one physically resides, warning that attempting to apply using their European residency while located in Malaysia could lead to rejection based on ticketing discrepancies. Additionally, the complexities arising from differing nationalities and entry requirements for Thailand are highlighted.

I think the reason you can't find an answer is that the evisa system is quite new and no one has pushed the limits of it yet (or at least no one is saying) I can think of ways of doing it but you would be risking the visa fee and possibly not be able to get a visa at all.

Guess I'll have do it the old fashioned way.

Keep in mind Thailand does not recognise "European Nationality" as Europe is not a nation. Each individual country has different entry requirements for Thailand. It's the same with Asia, as Laos, Singapore and India all have different requirements

sure, I understand the distinction. I meant it in the sense of being from a country in Europe.

Yes exactly what I mean. It's like saying "I'm Asian, what are the requirements to enter Thailand". Means absolutely nothing, as each country is treated differently.

Okay, Bobby. Don't see what difference it makes whatsoever, as I have explained the issue. But appreciate your thoughtful input.

Evisa is exactly like applying for a visa before that system, it's just online instead of the old method. Therefore you must apply where you physically are.

Like you said, your ticket won't show you leaving from your home country if you tried applying there, and they would reject your application for that reason.

thanks for your quick response. Yes, that makes sense. I played around a little on the e-visa site and it would be fine, in theory, to apply online with a European nationality and, say, a UK location but not a Malaysia location. While a Malaysian person in Malaysia has to apply at an embassy or consulate. So perhaps the rule is you can apply in any location that is part of the e-visa programme?

For the most part, those places with evisa only allow you to apply with evisa. They don't want people going into the consulates anymore
