Hello all, I was recently told by someone in another group that if I am on the two month extension given to foreign parents of Thai citizens (with no marriage to a Thai citizen, or in my case a divorce) that from there I can apply for a one-year extension? I’ve never heard this before and I’m wondering if anybody else has. Again this is simply coming in on a tourist visa, extending for two months showing my children’s birth certificate etc. and then from there I should be able to extend for a year? has anyone heard of this? Or better yet has anyone done this? TIA

TLDR : Answer Summary
The individual is seeking information on whether they can apply for a one-year extension after initially receiving a two-month extension based on being a foreign parent of a Thai citizen. According to comments, it is possible to apply for the one-year extension, but there are strict requirements such as having a significant amount of funds in a Thai bank account or proof of monthly overseas income.

You can, but there is an extensive list of requirements and documents needed. The big requirement is that you have a minimum of bt400,000 in a Thai bank account in your name only for at least two months before you apply, or bt40,000 minimum a month coming in from overseas into your bank account for the last 12 months. This is set in stone with no exceptions. If you can meet this requirement then contact immigration for a list of the rest of the documents needed.

I meet the monthly requirement easily, just not the 400,000 at one time. Is it really either or?

, yes. It is either, or, with no exceptions. Contact immigration right away, in person, with your child. They will tell you exactly what you need to do, but take your child with you, as that can mean allot.

Every time I have gotten a two month extension, my children have been with me. No one has ever mentioned this option regardless of how many times I have asked if there is something for this situation. Now that I know it exists, I will go back. However, do you know the name of this visa? In English, and or Thai? I speak Thai, so thankfully that is not the problem. Your advice is much appreciated.

Ok, thanks. So I need to be on an O first then yes? That’s part of the problem as I would need to leave TH to do that but won’t be able to get back in given everything right now... but thanks for the info. It’s at least a place to begin.

, are you referring to a guardianship, or a dependent situation, because there is a difference financially?
