TLDR : Answer Summary
Yes, you can apply for a Non-Immigrant O Visa at a local immigration office in Thailand, but not every office allows this. It's essential to check with your local office regarding their specific requirements. Generally, you'll need proof of 800,000 baht in a Thai bank account for 2 months prior, and these funds should ideally come from an international transfer. Some users recommend applying for the Non-O eVisa from outside Thailand for a smoother process.
NON-O RETIREMENT VISA RESOURCES / SERVICES
  • Go to the Retirement Visa Section for information on requirements, including age restrictions, financial requirements, and necessary documentation.
  • For immediate assistance, contact Thai Visa Centre directly via LINE at @ThaiVisaCentre or Email them.
  • Explore recent discussions by using the Non-O Retirement Visa tag in the search box at the top of the page.

Thanks people. I really appreciate your input.

I think I’ve finally got my game together with the e-visa in Aus. I think I have enough days until I fly for processing on “staying with Thai family 60 plus days” I married Thai years & years ago. Thai e-visa stated a processing time of 5-10 days.

Thanks again 🙏🇹🇭

It's possible. To obtain Non O from visa exempt entry you use TM87 and from tourist visa, entry TM86.

Funds (800k) must be in Thai bank account in your name only.

Needs to be international transfer.

Unless you already have a bank account then the process not possible.

Better option is to obtain Non O eVisa outside of Thailand and enter with that.

You will then be able to open bank account and obtain 12 month extension.

thanks mate. I’ll keep that one up my sleeve.

What caught us out was when we went to our local immigration office when in Thailand in October, the immigration receptionist said I can get the visa requirement in 7 days but we were leaving in 6. She said just do it when you come back. Great!

Since I’ve been finding out more, it all depends on whether the immigration officer in front of you is having a good or a bad day.

Xmas day, I find out about non o. What a day that turned into. 555.

I think I’m there with the e-visa angle but what you said above might have been what the immigration receptionist was referring to.

Yes, but you only need a bank letter with 800,000 guaranteed in the bank and the bank will not give you a letter without it being locked up for four months. It’s a pretty easy process.

The advice is to get the Non-O before arriving in Thailand

I only found out today about non o & have a ticket booked for 17 Jan with my Thai wife from Australia together. Big oversight.

I’m worried I won’t have time to get the visa before we fly.

I hear I can go to a neighbouring country to apply for the non o rather than come back to Australia or fly to Canberra in person before we fly.

Other option I have seen is to go to a neighbouring country & apply from there.

Thanks all for your input.

if you meet all the requirements for a NON O and send all the documents ASAP you should have the visa before the 17th

You cannot get a Non-O in person in Canberra so it's either an in country conversion or visit a neighbouring country if the eVisa approval times for Australia are too tight for your flight date.

That would be a question for your local immigration office. Not every office allows conversions to non-O. For the offices that do, they each have their own requirements. You should go there and ask if they allow it and for their printed list of requirements. The primary thing is going to be proof of 800,000 baht that's in your Thai bank account for 2 full months already and that you can show was transferred from overseas.

do I need a non o to open a bank account. I have read that I can open a savings account on a tourist visa.

Unless you get a affidavit letter confirming your income from your embassy, you have two options: Use an agent for the process or apply in a nearby country.

you will struggle to open a bank account on a tourist visa or visa exempt entry these days. It's probably easier to leave to a nearby country and apply for the 90 day Non-O there using funds in your home country. Once you have it return to Thailand, go to immigration and get a residence certificate, get a mobile SIM registered against your passport and then visit a bank to open an account and deposit the funds required for the 12 month extension of stay
