Can I apply for a DTV visa in Thailand with investments instead of cash?

Hi everyone,

Now that Thailand has returned to their 30-day visa exemption rule, I am considering an application for a DTV visa.

I work mainly as a freelancer, and I have bank statements showing a stable income. However, I do not keep a lot of money in cash. I invest almost everything in ETFs and stocks immediately and only keep what I need for my living expenses. My investments exceed the 500k Baht requirement by a considerable margin. My cash statements do not exceed the required amount.

Will they still approve my application? Or should I not even bother applying? I am currently in India and will apply through Chennai. I am a German citizen.

Thanks!
Summary so far
The discussion revolves around the requirements for applying for a DTV visa in Thailand, specifically concerning the need for liquid assets rather than investments. The original poster, a German freelancer currently in India, seeks advice on whether their application will be supported given that their significant funds are tied up in stocks and ETFs rather than accessible cash. The responses collectively emphasize that Thai immigration authorities require proof of liquidity, meaning applicants must demonstrate a certain amount of cash in an accessible bank account, typically for a minimum of three months, rather than relying on investment accounts or assets that are not immediately available. Overall, several commenters express doubt about the approval of the application under the current financial circumstances.

If 60 days was enough before why don't you get a 60 single entry tourist visa or a 6 month multiple entry tourist visa.

No. They will not. You need to have a bank statement with a total of minimum 500k THB or in another currency and history of 6 months salary from the company that you work for, each transaction highlighted and on top you need to have an explanation letter as well.

Yannick Schroth with this visa there's more scrutiny and you can't get a bank account

Needs to be liquid. The idea is that if you get hurt or in trouble, you can go to the bank and get money. You'll also need it in your account for at least 3 months; something to think about if you'd want in the future,

I applied for a DTV through a company, I ticked all the boxes plus plus..... Got rejected with no reason given. I contacted the embassy and they still refuse to give any reason for rejection. It's a scam....

That might be right, but when you pay a fee and comply with all the rules, regulation and whatnot, and you get a rejection without reason it is the same as scam companies. You pay, and get nothing back, not even a reason or explanation.

You pay me 5000 bath and if you are a dick I will give you

in return. Then, you are a dick, everyone agrees so you are entitled to

. But then when you ask for money, you get no reason why not. Me 5000 bath richer and you pissed off...

consulates are under no obligation to tell you why you were rejected. In fact it's pretty standard for all consulates of every country to not provide a reason

does a money market with a stable $1 a share if held at a brokerage account satisfy the requirements?

Stocks are no good, you need accessible money in an account that you can show you can draw from if needed. Savings account, chequing account not investments

Governments don't care about investments anywhere in the world. Government is not a bank to give stuff based on assets you use as collateral, liquidity only, and no crypto 🤝. Especially volatile stuff such as stocks, per example for marriage visa I need 400k every year, they need that in Thb, because if I would use stocks those 400k in 12 months could be 600k could be 100k, doesn't make any sense, also purpose of said imposed financial liquidity required is to show them you have enough money to support yourself while you're here and not end up putting pressure on taxpayer's money if in emergency.

For the DTV you would need that money in a savings / cash account. So, you should likely (temporarily) sell some of your investment portfolio. As for the (made up) seasoning requirement of some embassies: I would just explain in the cover letter that you transferred to money from your portfolio (and show proof of that transaction).

It might be easier applying through Germany. But yes, technically you are required to apply through India if you currently reside there.

Unlikely. You can't use investments to apply. You need money in an accessible bank account. Some consulates require it to be in the account for at least 3 months, you'd need to check with Chennai as to their requirements
