Can I apply for a 60-day tourist visa in Penang without prior preparations when my non-b visa and work permit expire?

Hi, I have a non-b immigrant visa and work permit both expiring April 30th. I'm going to Penang April 25th for a visa run and coming back to Thailand April 30th.

If I'm not mistaken, I can get a single entry tourist visa for 60 days by applying one morning and picking it up the next afternoon..right? I just want to make sure I don't have to prepare anything in advance because it's been a while since I haven't had a tourist visa.

My goal is to re-enter April 30th on a 60 day visa, and extend at Chiang Mai immigration for another 30 days then repeat the process with another visa run. I was told this should work.

Also, do I have to cancel my work permit myself if my employer doesn't do it?

Thanks so much :)

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user intends to apply for a single entry 60-day tourist visa in Penang on April 25th, just before their current non-b immigrant visa and work permit expire on April 30th. They seek confirmation on whether they need to prepare anything in advance, and if their plan to re-enter Thailand on a tourist visa and then extend it in Chiang Mai is feasible. They also inquire about the necessity of cancelling their work permit if their employer does not.

You aren't going to have any problem exiting the country and getting a tourist visa from a thai consulate whether you cancel the current extension and work permit or not. It's just if you ever wanna work here again that you can have problems getting a new work permit and extension.

Great. I don't think I'll ever work here again ๐Ÿ˜ after 2 years I need a change! Thanks for your help ๐Ÿ˜Š

you need proof of 20K baht in the bank, proof of a hotel booking and proof of onward travel to get a tourist visa from the thai consulate in Penang.

You should also go cancel your work permit and then go cancel your extension of stay based on employment, NOT let it just run out because that doesn't cancel it.

Time, copies, stress all to get the Work Permit and Extension of Stay. A few minutes to cancel it all according the rules seems to much asked for.

okay thanks. It was issued in Phayao but I wasn't planning on going back. I guess I'll figure it out after these next few weeks of traveling ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

@Ama***
, you cancel a work permit at the Ministry of Labour. I would say you go to the office that issued it to you

Also, do I need to cancel the work permit at the place it was issued?

alright sounds good. I am only staying a few more months in Chiang Mai (6 total) and won't be working in Thailand again. Should I still do it you think?

, you show a bank statement for proof of funds.

IF you're ever gonna work here again you need to follow the rules which is go cancel your work permit, take that receipt and your termination paperwork to the immigration office and cancel your extension.

Otherwise IF you try to get a work permit and a new extension down the road they will see you didn't cancel the other ones.

Sounds good, thank you. For the proof of 20K in the bank can I just show a bank statement or do I have to have cash?

You mean cancel my work permit and extension of stay at immigration? I can't just leave without doing that?

Thanks again
