#SHOCKED#

Bangkok bank 2nd road, Pattaya klang. Just been informed by many of the staff who had a long conversation. Foreigner can no longer open bank account until they're on a long stay visa (not 3 months). I asked even if I het permission letter from immigration? They said NO, because can buy, so we not accept, in other words cos some officials are corrupt and will produce the letter for 500-1000bt, they will not accept. I asked about the insurance policy purchase, no not available to you, only option they gave was a 50k per year life insurance policy, which u commit to for 8yrs, then wait +7 more years for it to mature and with interest it will return approx 450,000bt after 15yrs. Yeah no. Anybody successfully opened a bank account in Pattaya in last 2 months with letter from immigration? Staff were adamant "all banks same"

TLDR : Answer Summary
Recent changes in banking policies in Pattaya have made it significantly harder for foreigners to open bank accounts without a long-stay visa (such as a Non-O visa). Many banks, including Bangkok Bank, now refuse to accept short-term tourist visas for account openings, citing increased fraud and the need for stricter liabilities. Comments from various community members indicate that while some have managed to open accounts, often through agents or with specific documentation (like a residence certificate), the overall consensus is that these procedures have become more complicated and require a commitment to long-term financial products, such as life insurance policies.

not all banks same. bangkok bank opened my account tourist visa the 30 day one.

In Europe no tourist would ever be able to open a bankaccount on a tourist visa.

Why should it be possible here? It doesn't make sense for a bank to do that

USEFUL INFOS : regarding Name / Phone number : "Foreigners are required to present their passport when purchasing a True Mobile pre-paid SIM card in Thailand. This is because Thai regulations mandate that all SIM cards must be registered with the user's identification details, and for foreigners, a passport serves as the primary form of ID"

Opened a new account on Wednesday. Saw many foreigners in the same bank branch at the same time with a variety of agents. As far as I understand they were all applying for non-o visa changes leading to the retirement visa.

so you opened a bank account on Wednesday I'm guessing without a permission letter/ resident certificate, as you didn't know what that was. But you didn't feel like sharing this bank where they are handing out accounts like sweets? 🙊

I had a residence certificate.

You should have called it that in the first place as that is what it is called .. not a "permission letter"

The thing is, well other than 80% of u totally missed the point 🤣. They are stopping us from getting accounts because immigration have corrupt officers that sell the permission letters. But today I have had to reach out to a corrupt bank official, who will now open a bank account for me for a small fee of 3,000bt, make it make sense 🤦
Christopher ***********
@Osian *******
Congratulations! It’s the simplest and usually the most cost effective thing to do. Coincidentally, the Bangkok Bank Personal Accident Insurance I had to buy back in 2017 to open my account also cost 3,000 baht. I did similar when I lived in South America. You needed a National ID card to open a bank account. Someone recommended a bank manager who, for a bribe, opened one for me without.
Greg ******
A visa should not be needed for a bank account.
Henrik *****
If you are shocked then it is because you didn't do a proper research before trying to open a bankaccount.

It is commen knowlegde that it is next to impossibel for foreigners to open a bankaccount in Thailand, lots of posts in the group tell that.

Banks in Thailand are like everywhere in the world, interested in having good stable custormers, that have a permanent address, a steady easy traceable income, and use the account all year round.

That is why the banks are reluctant to give accounts to people on short time ( read: tourist ) visas, and who only spend part of the year in Thailand.

Don’t expect to get a residence certificat, until you have stayed at a permanent adress in at least 3 month, since that is what the residence certificat should confirm.

Furthermore the added attention on whitewashing of money, is an added burden on the banks, so reluctant depositing large amounts isn’t a guaranteed way to open an account.

The value of a resident certificat, had gone down, since Immigration Officers are giving them to people that are not on a longterm visa, or have stayed severel months at 1 adress in Thailand, so even if it is a formal requirement, the bank make up their own assesment of the stability of the want-to-be customer.

while i would love to agree with your support for the banking system and all the posts stating it impossible, you seem to be avoiding the catch 22 situation many will find themselves in. I am on a non-o so the tourist thing was irrelevant, we need a bank account to deposit money before we can extend, but the new crack down in your words will not give bank account unless proved 3months of stable living, but our deadline is coincidentally 3 months, THE IRONY 🤦

THAI ******************************
There’s a lot of misinformation going around about this topic.

The main issues are happening in Pattaya.

If you're outside Pattaya, we recommend checking with your local branch or agent for the most accurate information.

Our team can assist, but we only support clients who plan to apply for a Non-O, DTV, or other long-term in-country visa, as part of our screening process.

From what we understand, the situation comes down to two key factors: banks are starting to face greater liability for fraud, and in Pattaya, the high volume and ease of account openings led to a surge in fraudulent activity.

Requiring insurance helps reduce the risk of fraud by increasing the cost per account, making it less appealing for fraudsters. Working with trusted agents who have no history of fraud-related account openings also lowers the risk.

Banks are also starting to scrutinize specific branches. For example, a branch with a high number of accounts linked to fraud will likely face increased oversight and tighter controls.

@THAI *****************************
Here is the reply your agency sent to me a few days ago:

“To use our service you must at least have a bank account.

We suggest obtaining one on your own, or coming to Bangkok as we can assist you here.

If you had a bank account already then we could fully service you without you having to come to Bangkok.”

I understood this to mean you could not help me if I came to Pattaya.
THAI ******************************
@Doug ******
That's correct. We require you to be here in person for banking services, which is different from most of our visa services.

Once your bank account is opened (either by us or by you), you can take care of your visa needs from Pattaya without having to travel to Bangkok.
Doug *******

@Osian *******
here in this group there are people who claim that you can open a Thai bank account on a tourist visa, if you use and agent and if you are willing to buy more of their services, like a visa service, from that agent. I just wonder why they all keep quiet and haven't posted yet, directing you to the "right" agents
THAI ******************************
Pattaya has faced some issues recently, and several major agents were no longer able to assist with account openings.

Most branches outside of Pattaya remain unaffected. Ultimately, it's up to the individual branch and manager to decide whether to take the risk of opening an account for you.

For our clients, we require the purchase of an insurance package (approximately ฿5,900) and conduct a screening process to ensure they intend to stay in Thailand long-term.

The problems in Pattaya arose largely due to the lack of proper screening. Too many accounts were opened without vetting, leading to a spike in scam-related activity.

That being said if you come to our team with intent of long stay then we can assist with Bank account opening. For example obtaining a non-o, or DTV visa.

The essential change is that instead of a 12 month ‘one off’ Personal Accident Insurance policy Bangkok Bank now insist upon us taking out their Life Insurance. There is security value for your partner in so doing. Wife has a couple of friends whose Farang husbands turned alcoholic, drank their savings, incurred hospital bills then died leaving them unable to pay for their funerals. My wife has taken out Life Insurance upon myself with Thai Life.

its always been my belief, that if you have so much time on your hands and doing things by the book, then why use an agent, I've always loved the challenge and the time wasting as long as the building is airconned 🤣. I've always considered agents to be there for those trying to cheat the system, although I'm sure there are outliers. But this is my first hiccup in 12yrs of doing business in Thailand, where i now have to grease people's palms to cheat the system because the system is broken. And by all accounts even agents are being turned away on this issue

Exactly the poster says you cannot open a bank account on a three month visa. The only three month visa as such is a non-'O', which is a visa for those wishing to stay for retirement purposes. If you enter with a non-'O', or change your visa to one and produce a certificate of residency from Thai immigration then you should be able to open a bank account.

- 2 months ago, in country immigration 90 day eTR to non-O 90 day (Professionally dressed, rudimentary Thai, joyful gracious affect in response to LE civil servant). I walked to BKK. Bank took my cash in 10 minutes.

In hindsight, I genuinely believe agent services make $$$$ simply by stepping between untoward 'customers' / immigration / banks etc. The fatigue of dealing with varying levels of hmm 'angst', in my observation, makes it easy for each of the customer service personnel to say 'no'. To be frank. If I were in those shoes..... back in the infinite loop goofballs.

I do right when I'm a visitor in a foreign country. Thailand's problem is they let in a lot of trash (holiday millionaires!) Who blind side the local population. If they cause trouble deport, and make sure they can never get back into the country. The Thai don't need or want them and neither do the genuine expat. Simple.
