I’ve heard that some branches allow DTV holders to open a bank account. Has anyone successfully opened one recently?
Answer summary
There is mixed feedback regarding DTV holders opening bank accounts in Thailand. Some users report success at various branches, like ttb bank, while others warn that the process may vary by individual applicant circumstances. It's essential to have the required documentation, including a Thai TIN tax ID and possibly a yearly contract. However, some comments express skepticism about the possibility, suggesting caution against misinformation.

YES, YES, Tell them you have a DTV, a

The holder of the Decide Thai Values. You decide, not the staff at Thai Embassy, not Immigration Officers, not bank employees,

what are these people thinking? Offering an I Decide Thai Values e-mail and did not train all citizens to follow the rules of the DTV holder.

The OP has 'heard'. But not saying from whom. He then says; 'I checked with three TTB branches in Chiang Mai. One of them was reportedly allowing DTV holders to open accounts, but it now seems like a dead end'. Not raising false hopes in order to dash them again by any chance?

It's not the branch.. it's the applicant. It's how they assess you.

Now that the typical uncoordinated overreaction by thai banks is over, you can walk into different branches and ask what you need to open an account.

What Frank said is a good baseline to start at.

Why you want to open Bank Account ? This Visa does not allow you to open an account

Because you need a bank account to pay street vendors, and carrying around a lot of loose change is annoying.

there are many good reasons to have a Thai bank account. I think all long stay Farangs should try to do it, if only to make their lives easier.

I've had accounts with 3 different banks now (I dropped Kasikorn following a bad dispute where they stole 2 million baht that should have been awarded to me), but SCB and Bangkok Bank have been good.

However I could only get those accounts with a non immigrant B visa and a work permit.

DTV will be more difficult.

But it appears that now the 5 year visa is more than a year in operation, some banks might be willing to open accounts for holders. It's a good question.

Yes. ttb bank might. But you would need to show at least a yearly contract and a Thai TIN tax id - among other things.

Did you have and present at least 1) yearly lease, 2) Thai TIN tax ID, and 3) a remote work contract?

I see. Yeah, sounds Thai. Irrespective of the legal situation, they mostly just follow what they have been told by someone superior who also likely did not really know.

They didn’t even ask for anything. Once I said “DTV,” they were just like, “Cannot.” XD.

Thanks for the update. It is just a typical Thai chicken and egg state right now. Not allowing DTV holders to open bank accounts is just stupid - as they can easily become tax residents in Thailand (by having their major residence there). But Thailand is just full of crazy, illogical things like this. Maybe they will fix it some day soon. After all there is not real / hard law prohibiting DTV holders or even tourists from opening bank accounts.

Okay. Maybe. I have not tried myself as I am already set. But I am sure there will be possibilities again in the future. After all there is no hard law preventing DTV holders from opening bank accounts in general. The new Thai Wise (albeit a double edged sword) might also be a compromise for some.

Good question. So far I only heard reports about this working in a branch in Bangkok. I don’t recall which one exactly from the top of my head. But with a shot to go ask in any of their branches in expat heavy areas.
