Can Australians and New Zealanders currently use the Thai eVisa system for visa applications?

[edited for clarity.] it appears this post is a bit too pre-emptive. The evisa system says Aus and NZ can now use the evisa system but it appears it’s not quite the case just yet. It’s coming, but may take a few weeks. NZ says mid-March. I assume Aus may be similar but have no official details from there.

Ok Australians or others in Australia [edited to add NZ passport holders or those in NZ too] it now appears that you can use the Thai evisa system for visa applications. This has only been available in the past couple of days so we haven’t seen any posts as yet from someone who’s tried it. Please post your experience if you do.

This means that now you do everything online and there is no need to post your passport to the embassy/consulate. You get the visa by email as a PDF file. Print it out before you travel and show it to the immigration officer on arrival. They technically should see you have one on their system but may not spot it and stamp you in as visa exempt if not.

As said it’s all brand new for Australians to be able to do this so there may be some glitches. Feedback would be great on things like turnaround times etc from the various embassy or consulate’s.

Forgot to add the link. My bad.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The Thai eVisa system is reportedly becoming available for Australians and New Zealanders, but full functionality may not be active yet. While Australians are expected to use the eVisa for online visa applications, recent comments indicate there are glitches and it might not work for everyone. New Zealand is anticipated to fully implement the eVisa by mid-March 2024, according to the Royal Thai Embassy in Wellington. Users are encouraged to share their experiences and issues they've encountered with the system.

Not yet it appears. The system says it should but it appears they may have gone live with it too early. Perhaps in a few weeks that will change.

As of yesterday, Evisa in Australia unusable. I and others can't get past single/multiple entry. Tried many combinations with no success.

Hopefully the glitches will be fixed soon.

Looks like they are still in the process of making it work. Although why they went live with it is unknown. Aus maybe similar to the reply from NZ that it may not be available until mid March - although I’ve not seen anything saying as such.

Dear Ron,

At this stage the visa applications need to be submitted by send the original passport and other required documents by courier or in person.

*For your information, after Mid-March 2024, the Royal Thai Embassy Wellington will update/increase all the visa fees and E-visa will be available through Royal Thai Embassy Wellington (which mean you do not need to submit the original passport/all the requirements by courier). We will stop receiving visa applications by courier/in person after E-visa applications being officially approved and announce. For further update you may visit

This is the current status in NZ as of today...

I've used the US Thai evisa system twice. If it's the same software the first time is frustrating, but the system auto saves your application, and you can take it in digestible chunks. Passport photo file size is limited, and uploading some files was a bit clumsy. Approval time was quick. Overall I prefer it to mail in.

it’s the same system. It just hasn’t been available to Aus and NZ up until now.

So I am in Philippines right now. No need to go to Manila and visit the Thai embassy for a tourist visa? I can do it online now? Is it possible to get the METV as well online?

@Sebastian ******
No, the Phillipines do not use the eVisa system and a METV can only be obtained from the country where you reside
Stuart *********

@Sebastian ******
METV is only available from your home country. So you’d need to be in Australia to apply for one.

Philippines not currently on the evisa system.

But I am Australian..if there is no passport to send in required. Can't I use the online system in Australia - like Canberra?
Stuart *********

@Sebastian ******
No. you apply from the country where you physically are. In theory it could work but for the US and European countries that use the system it’s generally been a requirement to have a physical flight from that country to Thailand to do so. Perhaps some leeway for European countries using other airports to fly out but it’s generally the case.

In the Philippines you need to apply in person.

@Stuart ********
I wonder if one can apply using a VPN to sign into a server in one's home country?

@Tom ********
Lots of people wonder that too. The system doesn’t give a monkeys about a VPN. You can apply from anywhere on the planet. However they will want to see proof that you have right of abode in that country and generally a flight out of that country to Thailand. Some leeway may apply if for example you’re in Spain and are flying from Paris, but in general you’ll need a ticket from the country you are applying from.

Ok got it. Thanks for clearing that up.

as mentioned it’s just appeared to show that Aus/NZ can use the system but because it’s so new there could be glitches. I suspect they’ll iron out the cracks in the next couple of days.
