TLDR : Answer Summary
The question of whether a person can apply for a DTV visa from within Thailand is contentious. While some believe it can be done with an existing visa based on advice from immigration officers, the consensus among others is that the application must be made from outside the country at a consulate. Commenters point out the discrepancies in information provided by immigration staff and warn against relying on their advice, emphasizing the importance of understanding the correct visa application procedures.

This is exactly why you NEVER EVER trust an immigration officer INSIDE thailand about anything to do with a VISA you get from a thai consulate OUTSIDE thailand

AND

Why you NEVER EVER trust an officer at an embassy OUTSIDE thailand about anything to do with entry/extensions that you get from immigrations INSIDE thailand

They are two completely different governmental organizations (Embasssises are run by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Immigrations is run by the Royal Thai Police Immigration Division)

They have nothing to do with one another

This is what it says on the graphic about WHERE you can get a DTV

The RTC is Royal Thai Embassy and the RTCG is Royal Thai Consulate General <- here's a tip those are ALL in other countries ๐Ÿ˜›

He goes to apply for the DTV in another country

no. It's completely different to an ED visa. The comparison would be with a tourist visa (which it is based on)

@Tod ********
how crazy is that

The DTV can only be issued by a consulate. There are no consulates inside Thailand. The DTV is basically a glorified tourist visa, and just like a standard tourist visa it's not possible to obtain one inside Thailand
Andrew *******
Crazy how irresponsible the immigration officers are. They will just say anything.

Making money for Thailand, when the application is rejected and the fee is non-refundable.

They are not obligated to answer correctly every question foreigners ask. Thailand is allowing foreigners to live a decent life in the country that one cannot get in his home country. What more do you want? It is not a privilege.
Andrew *******
@Deepak ******
๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚. What does that have to do with what any of us said. If they arenโ€™t obligated why do they answer then?
Deepak *******
@Andrew ******
To get rid of annoying foreigners who can't live a decent life in their home land and have to travel 10,000 miles for a decent life.

@Deepak ******
Iโ€™m not sure how that applies to any of this discussion. But your saying a government official, in this case immigration, isnโ€™t obligated to give someone correct information about immigration issues, not sure that makes sense
Deepak *******
@Andrew ******
Nope, not obligated to give annoying foreigners who have thousand questions.

@Krystian *****
they just apply for you using evisa system

immigration officer will stamp it out too as they on it.

@Krystian *****
ofcourse it can be done and many people have already. Just saying itโ€™s supposed to not be allowed ๐Ÿ˜‚ but an immigration officer said np. They just make it up as they go along.

@Krystian *****
simply illegal

I would like to know if anyone has been able to do this from within Thailand.
John *******
@Anita *******
technically it is not allowed. That being said, some people have cheated the system into thinking they are outside of Thailand and have been successful.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been very clear on this. You canโ€™t convert visa to DTV and you canโ€™t apply while in Thailand. If your friend did so, it was against the rules

you can't apply within Thailand!
